Graveyards and burial procedures in Austria

I know this is a strange request, but it comes from a parish whose graveyard is almost full....a recent visitor to Austria noticed that the graves are smaller than in the UK and that they can have 4-5 family members.

Is there anyone I can contact to gain further information on how this works? It may be the solution to our problem!I cant locate an email address for any local Austrian town halls....

I have never measured graves but assume that those buried in Austria and England probably share relatively same dimensions. Thus I must assume that the size of individual graves are similar

What graveyard does the visitor refer to ?

My first impression is that the visitor may have seen numerous names on a single memorial stone over one normal sized grave. The ston may list the family name then various family members below with birth and death dates.

They are probably not aware that often the graves themselves are quite deep and several individuals are buried separately at different times and at different levels.

Most places - the family rents the area of the grave site for a fixed period - perhaps 10-20 years or other time frame- when this time period expires - a new rental fee to be paid.

Thankyou. I tried the email address, but it would not work. I will try the tel numbers today. I think you may have answered the basic question, which is the depth of the grave!

hi

there is the homepage of the Wiener bestattung

but everything is in German

www1.bestattungwien.at

Normall you don´t buy a grave (possible in the past) but you lease a grave . Afterwards it is your responsibity to look after the grave, gravestone, plants (not higher then 70 cm). The price of the lease depends on the cementary (eg how sought after, if you live in the rayon of the cementary eg. if you come from a different district, county you pay as much as triple the price, you pay more if the grave is close to eg. a Jesus statue and eg less if it is next to wall, you pay more if the grave is covered a by stone compared to grass)

here the different types of graves

for one Person: simple graves , for 10 years lease only

Family grave for 4 people, 10 years lease with prolongation possible

Family grave for 4 people with cryptial look , first lease 20 years with prolongation

Crypt/burial vault for 4,6,9 or more people , first lease 6 0 years with prolongation possible

Urn niche, first lease 60 years with prolongation

Urn nice for 4, 6, 9 or more urns, first least for 10 years with prolongation possible

here on messurment: Family grave for up to 4 adults : 2,20 m long x 0,80 m wide and 2,70 m depth

Single graves have the same size

If you want more details you can go to our Funeral museum

Bestattungsmuseum Wien

Goldeggasse 19
