Rail or Car, Munich-Salzburg

I am travelling with my 4 sons for a day trip to Salzburg from Munich (meeting up with friends). Our Munich hotel is relatively near the Munich train station. Would it be easier/more fun to hop on the train to Salzburg? Or is the ride the same view by car? FYI, our travel would be on a weekday. Any help is appreciated - thanks.

For me there is no reason to take the car if you don%26#39;t want to make any sidetrips. Well, if you are already in possession of car, it doesn%26#39;t actually matter...

But before I have to search a parking space in Salzburg, I%26#39;d take the train. Maybe your sons travel free of charge because of the summer holidays?

We rode the train Salzburg-%26gt;Munich last year. It was a double decker, so the view was good but I do not remember much special to see, though the country is generally pleasing.

The five of you can travel on a single Bayern-Ticktet of 29 euros if you travel by Regional Bahn, Regional Express or other local travel.

I have read that you need an Austrian Vignette for your car to drive on major roads in Austrian. I have no experience but you might research this.

Regards, Gary

The autobahn between Munchen and Salzburg can be very busy. Last September we sat in a traffic jam for about thirty minutes and then decided to exit and use the local roads instead. The previous poster is right that you need the vignette to drive on Austrian autobahns. The police have been doing a lot of roadside checks this year and the penalty for not having the vignette is high. The trains are frequent and efficient and you wouldn%26#39;t have to pay the very high car parking charges in Salzburg city.
