Hello All, Any advice on the following would be appreciated. We are 2x50 y.o. active couples holidaying in Europe 2009. We would like to add 3-4 days skiing and we will be there in September. We are 1 experienced skier, 2 average/basic skiers and 1 who will not ski.We would like a resort that caters for us all, say a village/shops/bar site seeing for the non skier and slopes to cater for the rest. We enjoy some night life also and are prepared to look at other countries as well. We will be in Paris then heading south to Italy so would fit skiing in between.Maybe I should post this in Switzerland forum also. thanks in advance...cheers!

Where in Europe will you arrive or what is your raw itinerary that brings you close to Austria?

Gday Mikey, Its early days yet, but its something like this. Arrive London, travel England visiting relatives, sometime in Ireland, fly to Paris, sometime either skiing Europe or French coast/countryside, head south to Venice, Chinque Terre,Florence, Rome, Greek Islands and then maybe fly out of Athens, total of around 7 weeks in Europe. But we are really open to any suggestions of places to see, resorts and accommodation.
thanks mate.

There are many regions in Austria where you can perfectly ski for beginners and experts as well.
Close to Switzerland there is the %26#39;Arlberg%26#39; area with places like Lech or St. Anton, two fancy villages with usually great snow (and appropriate prices). If you wanna get back to urban comfort, you could visit the picturesque city of Innsbruck, where the Olympic Winter Games were aleady held twice.
Visit this website to get an overview of ski resorts:

If you will be in or close to the Ötztal valley you could visit the Aqua Dome:

(rather for the non-skier)

For a September visit for skiing - you must look for a glacier.
Nice resports like Lech and Zurs do not have one and thus no skiing during that time.
Not far from Innsbruck and the breener Pass to Italy you can find 2 good glacier skiing areas .
Stubai Glacier - not far off the Brenner Autobahn and the italian border. Several nice towns offering good accomodations , shops.
Neustift is perhaps the nicest in my opinion.
Easy connection to Innsbruck for a non skier day trip and great for the skiers.

East of Innsbruck and at the end of the Ziller Valley - is the village of Hintertux and the Hintertux Glacier- The village small just devoted to skiers- less for the non skier.
If these do not fit with your travels - still several other glaciers with high altitudes and god snow.

As I focused on your second comment, I fully ignored that you intend to come in September.
As Vertical said, this is much too early for winter activities. Although we have glaciers it is not reocmmendable to ski there and tnen as the snow is often only ice and the valley with your accommodation very green. It would not be the experience I wanted to make....

Are the glasiers open for skiing in September???
|||
Hintertux Glacier is open 365 days a year- lower areas will be open according to temperatures and snowfall- but enough skiing available.
Stubai closes some of the higher lifts during the middle of the summer but I believe the area I know as the Schaufiljoch is open most of the year including September.
Hintertux is nicer in my opinion.
