Gürtel

I will soon be statying in a hotel near the Gürtel in the Josefstadt district. I recently read that this particular area of the Gürtel is notorious for street prostitution, sex shops and peep shows.

Firstly, is this true?

Secondly, if this is true, is this area safe?

Yes, this is true. It is not a nice area, but not really too dangerous.

Also the Gürtel is basically a 6-lane-road (plus the subway which does not run under ground there).

Which hotel are you staying in? It depends how far from the Gürtel it is located.

The Gürtel is a very very long and broad street with particular sections where (dodgy) adult entertainment is offered. You also see prostitutes by the Vienna Fair Center (Messe Wien). But as I don%26#39;t live there, I rarely use the Gürtel, but I can say that it is 100% safe unless you don%26#39;t enter one.

Furthermore, the eighth district is a rather fancy and expensive one, so just the vicinity doesn%26#39;t imply you are in danger.

You previously posted asking if Vienna had any Laufhäuser - well if it does you%26#39;re most likely to find them in the area of the Gürtel so you could be in luck with your choice of accommodation!

My brother and sister-in-law used to live near the Stadthalle which is near the Guertel, and I never had any trouble walking around there, even late at night. You may get some of the (bored-looking) girls in the windows making a half-hearted attempt at waving at you, but that it the most you will get.

It is seedy, yes, but not dangerous (except for crossing the road!)
