saw the possibility of taking a hydrofoil down the danube from vienna to budapest. sounded like a good way to see the danube valley and some countryside, although it takes much longer than the train. was talking to a friend who told me how unpleasant hydrofoils are. now i%26#39;m wondering??? has anyone taken the hydrofoil between vienna and budapest (or vice versa)?? what was you experience?

Your friend gives good advice.
The hydrofoils Vienna- Budapest are old , slow and not too comfortable.
In addition, the scenery along this portion of the Danube is not that great.
The trip upstream Budapest- Vienna is even slower due to current.
The train is better.

One alternative is the new fast boat service that just starts Vienna- Bratislava ( new boat ,) air conditioned, good seats and fast - 70 minutes to Bratislava- have a look at the city center then continue by train to Budapest.
look to

for more info. prices , times etc.
for info on hydrofoil

lclick on english - then to Budapest info.

We took the hydrofoil from Budapest to Vienna last week hoping for a lovely romantic trip sitting up on deck, watching the danube valley %26amp; the surrounding countryside rolling by. So what did we see - lots %26amp; lots of trees!! There were a few glimpses of scenery here %26amp; there but not a lot. You cannot get out on deck as there isn%26#39;t any, the hydrofoil is quite small %26amp; is closed in so its like driving through a forest in a bus!! Also there are 2 sluice gates to negotiate - we had to wait about a half hour at each one waiting for the water to rise so that the boat could carry on so it took 7 hours instead of 6. So the whole trip is pretty boring and I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it atall. You would probably see a lot more of the countryside on a bus or train. I think it would be much more enjoyable to take one of the short cruises which are available in Budapest on the open-topped boats - we took one to Margit Island last year, it lasted an hour %26amp; was lovely.
