nuremberg/salzburg etc

this trip is for germany and austria. total 13 days wish it was longer - can%26#39;t. first stop is nuremberg for 6 days - 3 days for nuremberg sightseeing - then side trips one day bamberg; one day bayreuth and one day regensburg; 7th day the train from nuremberg to salzburg - give 3 days to salzburg at least two one day side trips to berchtesgaden;and the other 2 days possibly one or two side trips to the villages around salzburg or a side trip to mittenwald which is germany. on ths forum very little is said about visiting berchtesgaden which is so close to salzburg even though it is in germany. is it overrated not as beautuful as you see in photos. overall is think this is a good 13 days if not could somebody tell me yes or no or whatever. my hotel in nuremberg is the holiday inn and here in salzburg the renaissance congress hotel. good choice or i could change them. thank you very much.

Hello, it seems you%26#39;re planning a great trip! To address the issue of Berchtesgaden it is mentioned frequently here but usually within the context of another posting concerning side trips, etc, which is why it doesn%26#39;t seem so obvious :-)

Berchtesgaden is a nice little town - more of a village really and can be viewed very quickly. For this reason some visitors just go there for half a day. It%26#39;s easily reached by bus from Salzburg, in around 30-40 minutes. What I would recommend, if it%26#39;s a nice clear day, is combining a visit there with a trip to Konigsee, just south of Berchtesgaden (again a bus will take you there very quickly). The centre of Berchtesgaden is very tiny. The main square has some interesting buildings and the mountain scenery all around is fantastic. But even if you have lunch there you really don%26#39;t need all day to see it. Catching the bus on to Konigsee would give you a great day%26#39;s sightseeing. At Konigsee lake you can enjoy walks to admire the scenery, or take a boat trip. The boat takes 2 hours and the scenery doesn%26#39;t change much so this might be too long if you have limited time. From the car park at Konigsee you can take the Jenner cable car to the top of the mountain. The views are breathtaking from the top, especially of Konigsee lake stretching away to the south. There are hotels and shops at the head of Konigsee. These are very touristy but good places to buy souvenirs. A ten minute walk round to a restaurant called Echostuberl is well worth doing. It%26#39;s a more traditional Austrian restaurant serving great food, or you can just enjoy a coffee there at the side of the lake.

You can catch the bus to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg train station and also at Mirbelplatz. It is the No. 840. You could go up into the village of Berchtesgaden, do your sightseeing and then go back to the bus station for the short ride to Konigsee.

Hope some of this is helpful. If you%26#39;d like to see photos of Berchtesgaden, Kongisee and the Jenner mountain you could send me your email address in a private message and I%26#39;ll email them to you.

Liz.

Mittenwald is too far away from Salzburg, so let it be if this village hasn%26#39;t a vast importance to you.

Have you tried the Berchtesgaden section in the Germany forum?

i can%26#39;t thank you both enough - liz i don%26#39;t have a printer so i wrote down what to do in berchtesgaden; you helped me more than you realize; and mikey i am leaving mittenwald out and stay in the salzburg area. you both have helped a grateful tourist.
