Melk in Jaunuary

Am visiting Austria from 6 January. At this stage I arrive in Munich and will catch the train to Vienna first and move my way back over the next 10 days.

I want to visit Melk Abbey- I know tours in Winter are at 11am and 2pm.

If I headed straight to Melk on the train from Munich getting in about 7pm at night (have used Austrian Railways trip planner to work out how long it will be)is there an internet site I can go to look for accomodation as I know Tourist Info will be shut.

Otherwise would it be best to go straight to Vienna as I have had a brochure sent to me from The Australian Austrian Tourist Board that lists all of their accom in Vienna so can safely book this for my arrival at night.

I know it is possible to visit Melk from Vienna but wondered about this as a possibility as it would allow me to stay in a smaller place and wander around the town in the morning before heading up to the abbey.

Thanks

There are numerous internet booking platforms, so it should not be a problem. Google %26#39;Hotel+Melk%26#39; you will find thousands of matches!

Maybe you will find some advice here:

Melk is a small town. In winter very little activity at night or early in the day. Many places closed as this is the non tourist season.

Others limited openings as they do not expect tourist in the evening.

You will find the walk to the twon center at night not extra easy - probably 10- 15 minutes - if you have luggage more inconvenience- few taxis if any at night -

Very limited hotels open and then you must find the open one- probably best is the Post near town center with a better restaurant too.

In my opinion, much better going direct to Vienna. It is much better to take a day trip from Vienna- no luggage worry - no problem finding a hotel- you can choose the day for your travel after looking at the weather prognosis. Nothing worse than walking around in the rain , fog etc.

Also getting to Melk from Munich requires a certain change of train- to Vienna usually no change needed on many trains.

Vertical, in my book, gives the best advice.

But I%26#39;ll offer my friend%26#39;s view, who visited Melk in the winter. He did the same thing as Kameka, arrived late by train (I think also from Munich), got a single room at the Hotel Zur Post, and enjoyed a lovely dinner at the restaurant at the hotel.

The next morning was magical, with almost no one around as he walked the small town, gardens and near the Danube waiting for the first tour. It was cold and cloudy, but also magically quiet. My friend felt a more religious connection at the Melk Monastery than if he had visited there in during the height of summer (like I was), with huge crowds.

My friend%26#39;s photos of Melk with snow are lovely. And, I%26#39;m jealous to say, better than mine!
