We are flying to Venice from the US and connecting through Vienna and have only 50 minutes. Is there any chance to make this connection. How long does it general take in Vienna to clear custom. Would it be faster to carry luggage with us or check luggage?

You do not mention if you travel with the same airline on both legs of your journey.
If the same airline your luggage will be checked through from USA to Venice.
If not the same airline but the airlines co operate with luggage the same will apply.
To try to clear passport control and, collect luggage , re check it and then get to the gate to catch your next flight probably imppossible.
That said-
Vienna is a relatively compact airport - your plane will probably arrive in the Termial A area - a short walk 3-4 minutes to Passport control ( usually not a long line and it goes quickly - note EU line and other nationalities line ) then about the same length to the next flight probably B or C area but these are close by and well signed.
You will then most probably go through security control at the departing gate.
If you have booked your flights with a single airline and ticket - they have considered the transfer time as doable.
Of course much depends on the timely arrival of your flight from the US.
if you should miss the venice connection- several other flights daily so not all is lost .

I assume you fly Austrian Airlines Dulles - Vienna - Venice. [OS 94/OS 521]. In Europe customs is done at your final destination airport, therefore you won%26#39;t see your luggage in Vienna. After passport inspection just proceed to Concourse B/C. Walking time is only a few minutes!
Flights to Venice usually use smaller aircraft, therefore expect to bussed what is handled at gates B21-B42 or C71-C75.

50 minutes is plenty of time for a connection flight. I think Vienna does also offer connections in only 40 or 30 mins. Vienna Airport is quite compact.
As Mikey said, customs is at your final destination (luggage tags from outside the EU are white, tags from inside the EU are green, so the customs officers can see where you come from).
Passport control will be in Vienna, you will also have to go thru security.
Mind that you are almost not allowed to carry any liquids or gels in your hand luggage, only in very small amounts:
flughafen-wien.at/jart/prj3/via/website.jart…
So better put all these things in the checked luggage as they will throw away anything (also bottles of mineral water and so).
