My family is planning a day trip from Munich next Sunday (July 6), by train. We plan to arrive at around 10:00 and depart at around 18:00. Which attraction shall we visit first: Hellbrunn Castle or Hohensalzburg Fortress in order to avoid crowds and have more free time to stroll downtown?
Thanks,
Fermin

I really don%26#39;t think it makes any difference. The crowds will not be a problem until August. You could get the bus into the old city and visit the fortress as it is the nearest. The funicular railway takes you to the top in 30 seconds. The views are great from up there and you can really spend as much or as little time as you like. There%26#39;s loads to see and there are cafes up there if you want lunch.
The No. 25 bus takes you to Hellbrunn. You can catch it at the Justizgebaude by the Carolinen Brucke bridge. Make sure you get on southbound. It takes about twenty minutes to get there. The grounds are enormous at Hellbrunn and the zoo is there but if you can%26#39;t fit everything in due to time pressures I recommend seeing the Italian gardens with the trick fountains. You are take round the gardens by a guide.
You still might have time to come back into the city and do some sightseeing. All the tourist attractions are very close together.
Have a great trip.

Hellbrunn Castle is slightly in the outskirt of Salzburg and Hohensalzburg Fortress is in the old town where all the other sights and attractions are, like Mozart%26#39;s birthplace, St. Peter cemetery/catacombs, museums, etc. If you really want to visit Hellbrunn Castle I suggest you visit this castle first then explore the old town and Hohensalzburg Fortress afterwards. I don%26#39;t know where your train arrives but Bus No. 25 from Hauptbahnhof(main station) will take you to Hellbrunn Castle(bus stop Schloss Hellbrunn).
I hope this help and enjoy Salzburg!

Hi
I just returned from Salzburg. I found Ubersberg most exciting of all.
It is a little far off but still my best site there. Provision for 1 hour for travel to %26amp; fro in all. You will need at least 60-75 minutes there. Its just awesome. However you need to amange the bus time %26amp; cable car timings well since you have limited time on hand.
If you can reach there at 11 am %26amp; leave at 12.30 or 1 pm. Next you could do Hellbrunn if you keen. I found it okayish. The castle is ordinary %26amp; trick fountains could be fun for kids. Its nice but if I had to choose between Hellbrunn/Fortress versus Ubersberg, I would choose Ubersberg anyday.
There is also a zoo at Hellbrunn but I didn’t have the time to do that. I just did the Trick fountains %26amp; it needs an hour I think. So if you can reach there at 1.30 -2 pm, you could be there till 3 pm.
Next you could do Fortress since it is open for more time after Hellbrunn. I spent an hour there. Like you, I too was short on time but I still had 1 full night there so I could do most sites but none elaborately.
If you reach there at 3.30 pm, without the zoo visit, you may be there till 4.30 pm. If you do the zoo, you will be done by 5.30 pm. There was also guide tour of the fortress but I had to skip that. It all depends on where your interest lies. Because I had done many other better castles %26amp; gardens elsewhere in my trip, I was okay to miss / hurry on some others.
This is possible but not going to be easy unless you manage your time well. Also, it’s a good idea to buy a 24-hour Salzburg card if you plan to do Ubersberg since the card (21 euros) includes the Ubersberg cable ride (19 euros) plus the visit to Hellbrunn as well as Fortress + Funicular railway at Fortress. Don’t remember how much was Hellbrunn %26amp; Fortress fees since I had my card anyways.
The other things I did were Mozart house %26amp; Mozart birthplace. Its not %26quot;my types%26quot; but my husband wanted to see those %26amp; hence we did a quick visit (30 mins each) there as well. These were also included in the Salzburg card too. The card also includes transportation within Salzburg. So that should be the first thing to buy as sson as you arrive.
At night, we did the old town walks. They were great. I liked them a lot. It needs an hour or so minimum.
Hope you find this useful. If you can, add a few more hours %26amp; it will be more fun. Cheers!

Hello, Willseedworld,
So glad to hear you had an enjoyable trip to Salzburg. I only came back from there myself last week and, to be honest, my head is still there :-) In your great enthusiasm for the Untersberg you have called it %26quot;Ubersberg%26quot; instead (which is in Germany, not far from Stuttgart). I wouldn%26#39;t normally mention this but I thought if anyone wanted to look it up on Google for information they might not find it. I hope you don%26#39;t mind me saying this.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, it%26#39;s really helpful for other forum members. I%26#39;d be interested in hearing more about the old town walks and the locations they cover. I didn%26#39;t know about these at all.
Regards,
Liz.

Thanks for pointing that out Liz. I knew something was wrong when I typed that but didn%26#39;t quite figure that one out...
The old town of Salzburg I referred to was about the cobbled streets near the Mozart birthplace area which were pedestrian zones with cafes, shopping, antiques etc. I had very good time strolling those!
I thought the area was called as old town but I could be wrong again!
And I completely agree with you, Salzburg cant get out of my mind either. Its is just superb!
