Many posters inquire here about side trips outside of Vienna.
I recently returned from a visit to Stift Klosterneuburg in the nearby town of Klosterneuburg and enjoyed this so much , I wanted to comment here.
This is an easy train ride from Vienna - or by bus from the end station of the UBahn line U-4
I was last there some years ago and wanted to go back as much has changed - and also for some of their wine- some of the oldest wine cellars in Austria-
I left finally, very happy -
The Church alone worth a visit - a nice choice of dining and also a wine tour. Thus a varied time.
All info on the website
www.stift-klosterneuburg.at
directions - tour info etc.
As this is just 15 minutes from Vienna , it provides a quick journey and offers another face to Austria.

A great recommendation, Vertical. The Verdun Altar at the abbey is simply stunning.

Was it this type of religious culture or the viniculture that made you leave happy?

So much to see there- much restoration work has been done and all is very interesting.
A visit to the %26quot; state of the art %26quot; biomass heating system installed there not too long ago - great reduction in CO2 emissions- installation is underground and thus few know it is there.
Of course, not all time was spent sightseeing and technical matters, a test of the St. Laurent assists in the enjoyable visit.
The Stift has many hectares - even some south of Vienna near Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf.
Thus , they have a wide assortment of wine- good quality and many awards.

I would also recommend a visit to the abbey in Melk followed by a relaxing boat trip through the historical wachau valley flanked by medieval villages and castles while drinking wine from the famous wachauen grapes ending in the city of Krems.

Another great monastery is Stift Heiligenkreuz which lies in the Vienna Woods south west of the city. It’s not as easy to get to as Klosterneuburg, but is achieving a lot of attention at the moment following the release of a CD of Gregorian Chant by its monks. The CD is at number 7 in the UK album charts and if this is happening everywhere could put Stift Heiligenkreuz on the international tourist map!
