St. Wolfgang, Hallstatt or ???

We want to get a look at the alps and someone suggested on this post that the mountains at Lake Wolfgang are just foothills. We had thought about going to Hallstatt, but it%26#39;s a five hour round trip day, not including a few hours to be there. So, we are staying in Innsbruck / Igls, Salburg and Vienna for a few days each. Where can we get to to see the Alps best, maybe even hike - without a car - for a day or preferably half day trip. Thanks

Hello, you will see mountains everywhere. In Innsbruck the mountains are very close to the town. The mountains at Wolfgangsee are lower than those in other areas but higher mountains are also visible.

A day trip on the train to Zell am See (less than two hours to get there) would allow you to see the really high mountains as it is located close to the high tauern range. Even a short trip from Salzburg to Konigsee would afford you fantastic views.

Hallstatt is spectacular. Are you able to hire a car for a day? We can drive there in an hour, easily.

If you%26#39;d like to see some of my photos of Konigsee, Wolfgangsee, Zell am See and Hallstatt send me your email address in a private message and I%26#39;ll email them to you.

Liz.
