Austrian mountain vacation for family

We live in Italy and want to spend five days in the mountains in late August. I%26#39;d love a suggestion for a place to visit with a family, not too far from the Italian border. Our kids are very young (1 and 3) so we clearly won%26#39;t be doing much hiking... prefer a relaxing vacation (minimal sight-seeing other than nature). Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Which part of Tirol? South or North (the part north of the Brenner Pass)?

I%26#39;m totally geographically challenged when it comes to Austria... so, I%26#39;m not quite sure. I%26#39;d guess south tirol as I assume that is closest to the border of Italy. But, we are open to suggestions if there is a great, charming town which offers a relaxing retreat!

Very close to the Italian border in Carinthia, there is the wonderful Gailtal valley. There you will find high mountains, small authentic villages and wonderful nature. It is not as touristy as many areas in the Tyrol.

I like this hotel:

You could consider the Pustertal in South Tirol, where there are any number of accommodations in small villages. Use venere.com or suedtirol.it for searching (the Italian forum has few entries on this part of Italy). To the north, my tip is the valley nearest to the Brenner Pass - Stubai. It%26#39;s an easy trip off the Autobahn, close to Innsbruck, yet bucolic and lovely. We stay in Neustift (Neustifterhof or Hotel Fernau a bit closer toward the looming glacier). Great hikes off the Elfer chair and the Stubai Glacier gondola. The family running the Neustifterhof are gracious, the rooms roomy with a view, and food outstanding. What is not to love?

Hi,

You don%26#39;t even need to leave Italy...

Have you considered the Italian Dolomites? The Val Gardena area is gorgeous and the Dolomites are stunning!

It%26#39;s made up of the 3 villages of Ortisei (with a pedestrian zone), St. Christina and Selva Gardena. There%26#39;s a very good cable car up to the spectacular Seiser Alm right in Ortisei:

A drive over the Gardena Pass/Grödnerjoch is something you%26#39;ll never forget... up close Dolomite vistas!

Nearby day trips could include the very picturesque town of Sterzing/Vipetino or the beautiful (and larger) town of Brixen/Bressanone.

Hope this helps.
