Hi,
I%26#39;m planning a trip to Austria with my boyfriend this summer. We%26#39;re going to Salzburg and Vienna but also wanted to visit the Hohe tauern national park. Which town would be the best place to stay for a couple of days? We would ideally like to see some glaciers and i%26#39;ve heard the ice caves are fantastic. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Jen,
If you are traveling by car or train can make a difference. With a car, I can suggest Zell am See as a place to stay. Gorgeous town situated on a beautiful lake, with a spectacular mountain backdrop! The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, an amazing road through spectacular scenery, glaciers and Austria%26#39;s highest peaks, including the Grossglockner (Austria%26#39;s highest), is a very short drive from here.

Our recent photo%26#39;s of Zell am See, Grosglockner Road, etc. are at:

Hope this helps.

To add a little to Paul%26#39;s excellent advice I%26#39;d say if you%26#39;re travelling by car do pay a visit to Heiligenblut, a beautiful village just below the Grossglockner and easily accessed from the Grossglockner road.
If you were to stay at Zell am See you could nip up the Salzach valley to Werfen and visit the ice caves there:

Paul is absolutely right, Zell am See is a great place in a wonderful location. If you take the cable car up the Schmittenhohe mountain, just behind the town, you have a 360 degree view and about 30 mountain peaks to see. Fantastic!

Hi again,
Just to add to LizR%26#39;s post, from Salzburg to Zell am See you could actually stop in Werfen as it%26#39;s on the way. There%26#39;s also an excellent castle in Werfen called Hohenwerfen.

We recently did the drive from Ramsau (Berchtesgaden, 20 minutes west of Salzburg) to Zell am See in under 2 hours, so you%26#39;d certainly have time to make stops along the way if you wanted to.
I also agree with a stop in Heiligenblut. Charming Alpine village with a wonderful church and beautiful location. It%26#39;s at the southern terminus of the Grossglockner Road.

Hi Jen,
Zell am See really is a perfect place, you have a lake, a glacier nearby, easy access to the Grossglockner alpine road and also the perfect infrastructure of a city.
The ice caves should be better done from the city of Salzburg, they are the largest ice caves of the world. Be sure to wear proper shoes and warm clothes! If you do not want to do the tour on your own there are guided tours running from Salzburg every afternoon at 1 pm. You may find the description here:

If you intend to visit Werfen castle you should think of joining the famous %26quot;knight dinner%26quot;, you can check the availibility from your hotel once you are here.
Best regards
Wolfgang

Hi all,
Thanks for all your replies - they%26#39;re really helpful. I%26#39;ll be travelling via trains so would i be best doing Werfen first then travelling to Zell am see?

Yes, you could stop in Werfen, but you also can go to Werfen as a side trip from Salzburg and use the buses from Salzburg - just as you like.
