I have time only for one of the above. Which location/ lake cruise is more scenic?

The mountains surrounding Kongisee are higher and more dramatic than those around Wolfgangsee but if I%26#39;m totally honest the cruise on Konigsee became rather boring. The boat is electric and takes two hours to go down to the end of the lake and back. There is very little to see apart from the mountains and although they are spectacular the view of them is almost the same for the entire trip. The guide on the boat spoke only German so my husband and I were unable to appreciate all the little jokes he told. There was no toilet or refreshments on board. The only stopping off points are at the end of the lake, where there is nothing at all, and St Bartoloma%26#39;s church which is lovely but we didn%26#39;t have time to look around before we had to get onto the boat again. At the head of Konigsee lake there are restaurants and shops. The shops are very touristy indeed but the views from the head of the lake are lovely. In the car park there is the cable car up the Jenner mountain where you can view the lake and all the surrounding mountains. I would sooner do this now than take the lake cruise.
I haven%26#39;t done the cruise on Wolfgansee but the whole area is very pretty indeed. I also don%26#39;t know how long the cruise takes but I know you can go from St Gilgen to St Wolfgang and back (and presumably vice-versa). The surrounding scenery is gorgeous at Wolfgangsee even though it is not as dramatic as at Konigsee. I think on balance I%26#39;d recommend Wolfgangsee.
I hope that helps.

I think LizR gave you a fair description of the pros and cons of the Koenigsee. If you want to see the same mountains, you can take the cable car to the top of the Jenner. The base station is within walking distance of the Koenigsee.
The area around the Wolfgangsee is indeed very pretty, more foothill mountains than alps. There is a road almost circling the lake, so that you are not limited to just a boat ride, if that takes too long. In fact, if you have a car, you can visit a couple of the other nearby lakes, each with its own characteristics and views.
A thir doption, would be to take the train or drive to Hallstatt. The location is very scenic, the mountains are high, but there is a road nearly around the entire lake. If you go by train,it stops across the lake from the town and you access the town by a short boat ride, with nice views.

Koenigsee is a very nice tourist attraction, but you have not too many options what to do and honestly spoken it looks like a real tourist trap. That%26#39;s why I would prefer Wolfgangsee.
There are various possibilities for boat trips and the %26quot;Schafbergbahn%26quot; would bring you up to a high mountain with wonderful view, you should not miss that.
The detailed schedules of boats and the train up the mountain can be found in an English folder, which you can download here:

Have fun!
