using public transportation system

Has anyone posted a message about using the public transportation system, difference between the S and U Bahn, using the trams, how/where to buy tickets, and whether it%26#39;s worth buying a multi-day pass?

You should get all the advice you%26#39;re seeking at the TA Public Transportation page:

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g190454-s303/Vienna…

The S bahn is a suburban rail system mainly using regular rail lines and often extending quite a bit beyond the city boundaries - where it runs in the city journeys are covered by city transport tickets/passes. The U bahn is an underground (mainly) system within the city boundaries. If you%26#39;ve further specific queries don%26#39;t hesitate to ask.

Norman is modest - I think that he wrote most of the content of the above site.

You can buy tickets at the Airport information desk- at automatic machines at most all UBahn stations- the system has numerous ticket offices too.

You will also see signs %26quot; Tabak %26quot; on city streets - you can buy tickets there also and also newspapers , magazines, stamps, etc.

If you stay 72 hours and plan to use public transport throughout your stay - the 72 hour card is a bargain.

Just back from Vienna, so I can answer my own question. We had no trouble using the underground system, but the trams were a little more difficult. The underground system stations were clearly marked on all of the maps we had, but the tram stops were not. People at the hotel told us where to pick up the trams we needed, but if we wanted to be spontaneous during the day, we were rather at a loss about what trams went where, and where the routes started and stopped. Once on the tram, we were relieved to see electronic signs on board that announced the name of the next stop, because we weren%26#39;t sure how we were going to figure out where to get off on some of our excursions out of town!

Well, subway systems are easier to use worldwide because of their reduced number of stops and lines and mostly logical alignment. Buses and trams feed to the underground network and servce the rest of a city. If I go to a place where I haven%26#39;t already been, I check the best connection on the internet. Then it is quite easy to navigate. If I am abroad I normally try to rely on the subways either as their usage is much easier and preparable than on buses etc.

Vienna Public Transport Authority should probably issue own maps with trams and bus lines to ease confusion of visitors.

They are issued every year and you can find one at any stop with a waiting house. One can also buy one at the ticket offices.

Well, I did not mean this map, because the bus and tram lines are almost unreadably printed into a large map of Vienna. If the map is in the sun bleaching takes place. The ones at the stop booths are barely useable for visitors.

Are tickets checked for validity? Is there someone on board of the buses that ensures that tickets are valid/authentic? I%26#39;m going in September and would not want to make any mistakes that would cause me to be fined.

|||

Well, if you will be in possession of a validated ticket or pass you won%26#39;t face any problems. There are inspections on a regular basis - some accompanied by police.

Yes, our tickets were inspected on the Metro- once in Vienna and once in Prague.
