About a day trip from Vienna to Melk and Durnstein...

Hi

I am going to Vienna next August with my family and we would like to do a day trip to Melk Abbey and Durnstein.

I am thinking to get the train from Vienna to Melk. From Melk we would like to reach Durnstein by boat and return to Vienna by train.

I kindly ask if anyone has some information about the river trips and if this plan will be the best to visit both villages.

Thanks for your help

I am going to have a look on both websites

You will note on the DDSG website that the boat from Melk stops in Dürnstein- after a visit in town - rather than waiting for a boat or having to lose time for this - walk to the local train station ( known as Dürnstein- Loiben )just east of the down- perhaps a 5-10 minute walk out of the east town gate. Signs are there to guide you I think.

Take the regional train to Krems train station - a 5-10 minute ride where you transfer to the train to Vienna- the schedule is co ordinated with just 3- 5 minutes between trains.

The boat dock in Krems is about 3 kilometers from the train station - Boat trip Dürnstein - Krems is not as interesting as that Melk - Dürnstein and distance is only 6- 8 kilometers.

Many thanks Vertical for your help.

I am going to follow your advice and return from Durnstein by train insted of doing the river trip between Drurnstein and Krems.

Do you know if it will be better to book the boat tickets in advance or we can do it on board?

Hello Margarida !

August is top tourist month. The boat trip - very popular thus the boats can be crowded and they do have limited capacity.

I think you can make reservations on line but this does limit your options- bad weather - change of plans etc.

Usually people line up some time before the trip at the dock side. I have seen big lines at times.

Thus your decision - no reservation go to the dockside early- and wait - also a small cafe nearby to get a drink or quick food. Walk from the center of town - perhaps 10+ minutes.

or reserve and hope weather is good ( boats have a nice upper deck open to the weather - but do have interior seating with big windows) - good weather makes a nice day - rain is not that great to do this trip.

Only yu can decide.

Thanks again Vertical for your reply.

May I expect good weather in Austria in August?

I have been in your beautiful country in Winter and Spring and it never rained!!But we had a fantastic snow in Vienna at the 2005 New Year`s Eve and we loved it so much!!

I think it will be better to book the tickets in advance,to avoid the long lines at the dock.Like we are staying in Vienna for 6 days, probably we will do it when we arrive.

We would like also to go to Bratislava by train and return to Vienna by boat,so we really need a good weather for our holidays!!

Regarding weather - really impossible to predict- if some rain it may often be a short thunder - rain storm of short duration.
