Hi!
I will be traveling the first time alone in Europe and read the Eurail web site but I need some questions urgently answered before I decide if I need to book a plan ticket or not:
This is the train route I%26#39;d like to take on these dates:
July 15: Train from Vienna to Rome (overnight)
July 21: train from Rome to Florence
July 23: Train from Florence to Vienna (overnight)
July 29: Vienna to Barcelona (overnight)
August 4: need to travel to get to Heathrow Airport from Barcelona to catch a plane leaving August 5.
1. Does the Global pass allow me to travel on the Eurostar from Vienna, Austria to Rome Italy?
2. For overnight trains, how far in advance should I make a reservation?
3. I was thinking of taking a train from Barcelona to France and take a ferry over to London/Heathrow to save money. What is the cheapest way to get to Heathrow airport from Barcelona: by train or plane from one of the Europass countries?
THANKS A LOT!

%26gt; I will be traveling the first time alone in Europe and read the Eurail web site but I need some questions urgently answered before I decide if I need to book a plan ticket or not:
First of all, don´t use Eurail and such to find travel information. They are incomplete and don´t provide correct pricing. Use one of the national railway websites, such as www.oebb.at, www.trenitalia.com, www.voyages-sncf.com
Most user-friendly for schedules in all of Europe would be the German rail website: www.bahn.de
%26gt;1. Does the Global pass allow me to travel on the Eurostar from Vienna, Austria to Rome Italy?
There is no Eurostar from Vienna to Rome. If there is an overnight train from Vienna to Rome at all (check the websites above) you will have to pay for the accomodation, which varies depending on the accomodation type.
%26gt;2. For overnight trains, how far in advance should I make a reservation?
If you make a reservation far enough in advance you can get advance discount fares that may be even lower than the accomodation supplement for your rail pass. But you have to book early (2-3 months in advance) to get them. In any case reserve as early as possible - night trains have a far lower capacity than a day train and therefore easily sell out.
%26gt;3. I was thinking of taking a train from Barcelona to France and take a ferry over to London/Heathrow to save money.
You do NOT save money this way. The cheapest way Barcelona to UK is flying.

Don´t forget to figure in the transfer time and price from wherever you land near London to Heathrow.
What is the cheapest way to get to Heathrow airport from Barcelona: by train or plane from one of the Europass countries?
What is an Europass country?

There is no overnight train from Vienna to Barcelona because a ride would approximately take 24 hours. Don%26#39;t underestimate the distances in Europe and any waiting times between such train connections! Nobody takes the train for such a long journey as it is usually decisively more expensive.
Following airlines provide one way transportation from Vienna to Barcelona:

www.flyniki.at
www.clickair.com
www.iberia.com

I agree and will add onto the budget airline list:
www.easyjet.com
www.myair.com
www.ryanair.com
www.wizzair.com
I like Sky Europe and they fly to most of the places listed. I added these just in case sky europe doesn%26#39;t offer the flight.

Quite right, all of the above - but there IS a direct train to Rome from Vienna, EN 235 Allegro Tosca, and it only takes 13 hours.
Vienna to Barcelona, though, that is a different kettle of fish and cannot easily be done by train, but if you like a challenge and have plenty of time, then be my guest... Seriously though, skyeurope is very good.
Use this for your train times jizdnirady.idnes.cz/ConnForm.asp…
If you are in a hurry, fly, but nothing beats going by train.
And don%26#39;t use Eurail/Rail Europe - they charge anything up to 100% more than the real price.

I had to have a chuckle at that one :) But try and steer clear of Heathrow - it is a nightmare and budget airlines don%26#39;t tend to fly there.
I personally would have done it differently altogether - Zoom flies from Vancouver to Manchester (UK) which is a bit of a budget airline hub, and it would mean that you wouldn%26#39;t have to negotiate London and the crossing thereof.
And what is a Europass country? It%26#39;s a new one on me...
