Can you advise me on good places/area to stay? Is bauernmarkt a central location? Any recommendations on things to do in January would be greatly appreciated.

We visited Vienna with two boys 15 and 13 and and they loved Schonbrunn Palace, and Schonbrunn Zoo. We particularly loved seeing the Pandas, monkeys, penguins and bears. The zoo is set up very differently to Australian zoos. The animals are much easier too see. We enjoyed it alot.

Bauernmarkt is a very central location in the center of the city - easy walking distance to much sightseeing, restaurants etc.
It appears you look perhaps to the City Pension or Hotel Schweizerhof as both are in that area.

For children, I especially would not miss the House of Music museum, which I have visited my 14 year old. He absolutely loved it. It%26#39;s between St. Stephen%26#39;s Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera.

It is lively, interactive and truly fun. You can sing in a shower, conduct an orchestra and do so many other interesting things. It is unique and also a wonderful break from history, although the museum of course goes gives much information on Austria%26#39;s musical heritage.
