Wachau; Melk-Krems

Hi,

I know there%26#39;s a lot of topic about Melk-Krems river trip on this forum, but I still have a question

From what I read, a good thing do to is:

Get to Krems from Vienna

Make the river trip to Melk from Krems

Visit Melk

and take a train back for Vienna

My question is

Can I catch a boat (at Krems) at any time? I mean, how many boats per day leaves from Krems?

I%26#39;d like to know if it%26#39;s %26quot;easy%26quot; and to move between Krems, Melk, Spitz, Durstein etc. with local transports

Thank you

You have various alternatives for this very nice day long excursion.

In my opinion, best to take the train from Vienna westbahnhof to Melk.

Train schedule

www.oebb.at

Visit Melk Abbey and town - the abbey a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. The town just below the Abbey - small but nice.

Then to the Danube docks - 10 minute walk from town center-

boat trip to whichever town you prefer- Spitz - Dürnstein or krems.

I recommend the boat trip starting in Melk - a little faster as you will see from the schedule- as it goes downstream and the Danube has a strong current - boats traveling upstream ( Krems to Melk ) must fight the current and trip is prolonged.

Two boat lines run on this route

www.ddsg-blue-danube.at

www.brandner.at

All boats are similar- top open deck for sightseeing - a salon area with large windows- a chance for snacks and drinks.

just 2-3 trips daily so you must schedule wisely.

For a stop - a matter of what you like -

Spitz - a smaller wine village - nice town square with Church and a few shops- numerous wineries- center of town about 10 minute walk from boat dock.

Fewer tourists.

Dürnstein- beautiful - filled with tourists from bus groups to river cruise boats- basically one street - beutiful old Church, castle ruins above ( Richard the Lionhearted held for ransom there during Crusades era. Some wineries too.

Boat dock 5 minutes from main street but a uphill climb.

Krems-a bigger town- boat actually arrives in the village of Stein - now part of Krems - beautiful old buildings ,Churches - Krems dates from 995 AD

The Romans had a fort across the Danube from the town so actually much older.

Nice museum etc.

Downside - the boat dock is about 2-3 kilometers from Train station- perhaps 20- 25 minute walk- 5 minute taxi ride or a bus stops just in front of the dock area , but service is not extra frequent.

Generally easy to move Spitz - Dürnstein- krems by regional trai- runs about every hour - train stops easy to find in Spitz and Dürnstein- you can pay the driver.

schedule

www.oebb.at

Regional train schedule is co ordinated with train Krems to Vienna - so you have a few minutes to walk perhaps 100 meters to transfer to the Vienna train in Krems. No waiting.

You probably already know that a Kombi ticket for train , melk boat ride is available.

Note -Melk is on the right side of the Danube looking downstream- all other places including train are on the left side.

an extended walk across the Danube Bridge or better a taxi from Melk to cross the river to Emmersdorf for the train if you wish this - boat ride better and more convenient to me.

many like the other kombi offers including the bike riding-

Make this trip if possible a fantastic and vareid day - obviously much nicer in good weather.

Thx for the infos!!

let%26#39;s say I take the Melk-Krems trip

is it possible to leave the boat at Durstein for example and then take the next boat to Krems?

Boat trip from Durnstein to Krems worth it?

if I want to stop at Durnstein, maybe I should not worry about the next boat to Krems and just take the train to Krems?

thx again

|||

oh!

I just noticed...

When I%26#39;m looking for schedule on www.oebb.at, I see something like 15 options for Durnstein

Durnstein/Wachau

Durnstein/Wachau/bahnst

Durnstein/Wachau/zentrum

Durnstein/Wachau/Heudurr

etc

etc

etc

Is it actually all the same place?

thx

Just use Durnstein /wachau - it may also appear as durnstein- oberloiben ( oberloiben a small village nearby without a train station)

Durnstein has only one train station just at the east end of the town - signs to direct you say Bahnhof - you walk out of the town gate - a shop on left side selling wine. Walk downhill on the path - crossing a highway - then food store on left side - some apartments - then turn left - the first street after food store I think - a slight walk uphill to the station- a little cafe there too.

From town 5-7 minute walk.

I would take the train Durnstein - Krems

1. no need for transfer from boat dock to station as you are already at train station in Krems.

2. provides more flexibiity- as more trains than boats.

3 trip Durnstein- Krems is very short - 10 -15 minutes passing just the town of Loiben- you will have seen best sights from melk to dürnstein.

Hi, I have been reading this and wanted to ask a couple of questions please. We will be coming by train from Salzburg on Oct 21st and thought we would stay one night in this area before going into Vienna on the 22nd.

My thoughts were train from Salzburg to Melk, arrive late morning, book in and leave luggage and early afternoon take boat ride to Krems. Look around and train back to Melk. Morning of 22nd spend all morning at Abbey doing tour and gardens and lunch at resturant there. Then some time in afternoon catch train into Vienna. Does this sound sensible to you wonderful people that live there. Because I do not understand the directions that every thing is can you please advise if this is the best way of doing things. Our accomodations is not booked yet so order of doing things can be changed. Our main thing is to spend time at the Abbey.

best wishes

This sounds great! Check the schedule of DDSG (danube vessel) and Austrian Railways to ensure comfortable transportation!

http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en (ÖBB)

ddsg-blue-danube.at/english/…e_lwac_fp.asp (DDSG)

If you travel in a small group (2 to 5 passengers) you should contemplate purchasing a special pass of Austrian Railways for 28€ that includes unlimited rides on all REGIONAL trains on a selected date for up to a maximum of 5 passengers.

The normal fare to Vienna is 16.10€/adult. For instance, a party of five persons only pays 5.60€ each. Just be aware that you are only allowed to use (slower) REGIONAL trains (and down...) after 9am (on weekends no time restriction) with this ticket, but as Melk is not serviced by superior trains you would not have any other train connection.

Thank you Mickey for your reply. I think this is the way we will go. May I please ask a couple of more question?

1. Coming from Salzburg at what town would we change to a regional train to go to Melk. I am trying to work out prices p2p tickets or a Austrian Railpass as we will later travel o/nite to Venice.

2. On the cruise boat I presume we go strait through to Krems. I means we dont get off and look around and then get back on. We would do the site seeing at the other towns when travelling back via train?

3. When coming into Vienna from Melk at what train station do we go? We are booked into Pension Suzanne in middle of Vienna opposite Opera House.

Thanks you for your time

regards
