advice for day trip to Vienna

We will be vacationing in Hungary in July. We will take a day trip over to Vienna via train. What are the highlights we should try to see while there? We will have about 4 hours or so. Any help or advice is appreciated.

4 hours? Waste of time as you will need one hour to get to and from the train station inluding a little time cushion. Vienna is the former residence of the emperor with many many landmarks and sights. Vienna accomodates 1.7 million residents on 430 km².

Have you toured New York City in 6 hours?

We will have 4 hours to tour PLUS time to and from Vienna. As I never consider seeing something, even a small part of something, as a %26quot;waste of time%26quot;, we will feel enriched by whatever we get to see. We have, in fact, toured parts of NYC in 6 hours, and each time we are there we get to see a little more.

Well, if you don%26#39;t mind seeing only a very few sights, then come over and enjoy!

If arriving at Vienna%26#39;s Railway Station West, then take the orange subway line U3 towards the city centre (direction: Simmering) and alight at %26#39;Stephansplatz%26#39;, where Austria%26#39;s most important cathedral is located. Walk through the pedestrian zone and enjoy the old-style architecture. Have a cup of coffee in a typical Viennese cafe and sample our delicious desserts. Furthermore, you should focus on the sights along the Ringstrasse with is gorgeous buildings. If arriving at Railway Station South/East, take the tram #D to the Ringstrasse and proceed likewisely.

I agree with Mikey. If you find that you have an extra 30 minutes to spare...add Kaisergruft to the list. It is off the Ringstrausse. It is the royal tombs and it%26#39;s really neat.

You would also have time to take streetcar 1 or 2 which circle the Ringstrasse clockwise and anticlockwise respectively taking about half an hour and running every 6-8 minutes. They afford great views of all the monumental public buildings built on this boulevard during the 19th century. If you did this is may be better to get a day ticket for the metro/streetcar system to cover all your journeys.

Though I posted a query abt. travel on another thread, I am joining this thread to enquire if for a day%26#39;s stay in Vienna, why not take the hop on hop off bus for the day and see all the sights one by one.

Is there any entrance tickets for the Palaces?

Thank you for your help. We have planned a grand tour of Hungary, and I%26#39;ve done much reading and research, but then decided to get over to Vienna while we were at it, so your help in planning our one day there is greatly appreciated!
