My family is scehduled to be in Salzburg for three nights June 14, 15 an 16. I am distressed that the Euro Football celebrations will ruin our enjoyment of the old city. Am I right to be worried?

Yes and no. On June 14 the match Greece against Russia will take place in Salzburg, so be sure to meet thousands of Greek and Russian fans in the city. To be very honest, I would recommend to avoid the city center on this afternoon and evening. The Greek fans will stay in Salzburg, but most of the Russian fans will leave the city again next day because it%26#39;s the only match of the Russian team in Salzburg.
Parts of the city center in Salzburg will have only restricted access after 1:30 pm every day due to the fanzones in the old town. If you schedule your city walks in the morning you should be able to walk around everywhere without any problem.
Also know that the fanzones will only disturb the center, so if you visit Hellbrunn castle or any other sight outside the city center you should face no problems at all.
On the other hand just take it as a chance to have the unique experience of being part of the world%26#39;s third largest sport event and to meet people from all over Europe - and honestly, most of them just want to have fun and are no rowdies!

I too shall be there during the Euro 2008 tournament. I%26#39;m not at all worried about it. It will certainly be more crowded in the city and the two main squares will have seating for fans to watch the games/refreshment areas but you would not be spending all your time in those two areas anyway. I have to say that two years ago, when Salzburg staged an art festival called %26quot;Kontracom%26quot;, I was far more offended by the upside down helicopter dumped in Residenzplatz, and the hideous wooden wall obscuring the views at Mirabelgarten. They really did spoil the enjoyment of my holiday. You will still be able to visit the tourist sights (note my thread about opening times at the Mozarthaus for 14th June) and I think the atmosphere in the town will be very friendly. Some years ago the Euro soccer event was held in England and some of the games played in my home town. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout.
If you want to get off the beaten track in the city there are some lovely hidden parts of Salzburg to visit and many short-stay visitors never find them. Take the Monchsberg lift up to the museum of modern art. Just outside the doors you can get a superb view of the city, away from the crowds. This is a spot that featured in The Sound of Music, but it isn%26#39;t featured on the SOM tour. There is a cafe at the museum but if you walk along through the trees on the Monchsberg you come to a lovely restaurant called Stadtalm where you can relax and enjoy the same fabulous views of the city. If you continue walking on the Monchsberg, towards the fortress, you see great views of the mountains. Many little paths lead back down into the city. Another place many short-stay tourists never discover is the Kapuzinerberg. Just across the river you can walk up the steps (from either Linzergasse or Steingasse) to the old Kapuzin monastery. Again there are fantastic views of the entire city from there, and this time there is the mountain backdrop to see as well. If you want to cheat and not climb all the steps you can take lunch in the rooftop garden restaurant at Hotel Stadtkrug on Linzergasse. Afterwards you can leave by the little gate that leads to the Kapuzinerberg steps. You are already most of the way up to the top there so it%26#39;s not such a climb.
The No 25 bus takes you to Hellbrunn palace, a little way out of the city, but it also takes you to St Leonhard and the Untersberg cable car. It%26#39;s a great experience to take the cable car to the top of the mountain. Not only are there panoramic views of the city but also over the alps too.
Other buses can take you into the Salzkammergut region where you can enjoy the lakes and mountains. The No. 150 leaves from Mirabelplatz (Schloss) and takes only 46 minutes to arrive in St Gilgen, a lovely little town on the shore of Lake Wolfgangsee.
I%26#39;m sure you will enjoy the city and I%26#39;m hoping for good weather for all of us :-)
Liz.

Thank you for all the information. This is my first trip to Austria. I am excited that it will be during the time of Euro games, just even more to enjoy. I love to see people as well as scenery. What a fun time.
Thanks!

And a massive bonus point.........
