My husband and I will be taking the Eurostart from London to Paris on 14 August. We have a return ticket for the 16th, but thought about training it around Germany for another week instead. I have no idea where to start the planning, though. My main concerns/questions are with train travel.
*We would like to visit the following cities: Berlin, Munich (with a day trip to Salzburg), and Vienna, Austria
*We plan to take a return flight back to London from Berlin or Munich (since they are the cheapest) on the 22nd or 23rd
Specific questions:
Is there more than one train company offering overnight service from Paris to Berlin? Berlin to Vienna? or is it just several vendors selling tickets on one train?
If I purchase a ticket online will that cover everything - entry to more than one country that I pass through, sleeper assignment, etc?
Are there any passes that will make grouping my travel easier or should I buy single passage to each destination?
If I do buy some type of Eurail pass covering a few countries w/in a month, could I just pay an additional fee for sleeper accomodation on an overnight train or would it be a completely separate and full price charge on top of the Eurail pass?
I’ve posted this in several relative forums hoping to generate answers from those “in the know” from each city. I have read other posts regarding similar questions but do not seem to find the answers to my particular questions. I will appreciate all positive feedback.

What about flying what would be cheaper and of course faster?
My suggestion:
- Fly from Paris to Vienna (90 minutes trip)
- Take the train from Vienna to Salzburg (2h40min)
- Take the train from Salzburg to Munich (1h30min)

Mikey, thanks for your quick response. I think we are trying to use air travel as a last resort. (My husband flies weekly for work.) Also, we thought that a night train would save on a hotel and would not take away from daylight sightseeing hours, not to mention get us into the city centre w/o the airport hassle, etc. Also, when I looked into airfare in the beginning the Paris to Vienna route was substantially more expensive than the other routes.

August 16th: 49€/person + surcharge of baggage (+7.50€) and credit card payment (+8€):
I suggested it as it would better fit into your itinerary including Vienna, Munich, Salzburg and Berlin. Furthermore, a comfortable sleeper compartment would be much more expensive than the flight. Formerly, I thought the same way, but finally a night trip on a train COULD take away valuable time and energy. Mostly you have to check out earlier as the trains normally leave in the late evening, so you have to store your bags elsewhere.
If you would only go to Munich I%26#39;d support your intention....
It is true that air travel can be exhausting but in this case considering this itinerary I would definitely take the plane. I am very dedicated to train travel, but there are cases which are better done by plane.
