Hi there all,
I am speaking at a conference in Salzburg at the end of October. Since I can not afford to hop over to Europe as often as I would like, I am trying to tie in another city to visit as well for a vacation with my husband. This is our new tactic for seeing Europe on a dime and no vacation leave, fly to one city and visit one more. I will be spending 3-4 days in Salzburg, but I would like to fly into another city to visit and take the train to Salzburg.
My husband and I were looking at Munich or Venice. I understand that Munich is close, so that is a definite positive. It is also the most suggested choice from friends who have been to Salzburg. The problem is that I never really considered Munich before I received word about the conference. I would prefer a city that I have an itch to see and experience. My grandparents are from Italy, so I have always wanted to visit there. How are the trains from Venice? I looked them up on RailEurope and it was a bit confusing. Is it an easy trip? Would Venice be extremely expensive?
If you had only 2-3 days spend in another larger city (about 4 hours distance) would you pick Munich or Venice? Is there anything I am not thinking about :)
FYI: We are in our late 20%26#39;s/early 30%26#39;s and are really flexible. We prefer to blend in and learn from where we are visiting.
THANK YOU

Hi,
I think either Venice or Munich would be great choices for a trip --- whenever I visit Salzburg, I always fly into Munich because it is much cheaper and is not very far from Salzburg - only about 2-2/5 hours from Salzburg by train (and the Bayern ticket, a train ticket that can get you around Bavaria and also to Salzburg, is quite inexpensive). Some people consider the cities similar, since they are both in/near the Alps and German-speaking places - however, I find them to be different and both are totally worthwhile. It would also be possible to an in-between day trip in one of the more resort-like towns between Munich and Salzburg (and there are plenty)
Venice is also a great city but a lot farther away than Munich. It%26#39;s a completely different experience but you might want to check prices and weather conditions around that time of year, which could help you make a decision. A train ride is possible but the Italian trains aren%26#39;t the most luxurious, although a trip from Venice to Salzburg would be scenic. You could also do a day trip from Venice to Padua or Verona, if you wanted to. Unfortunately I have no experience with the airports in Venice, so I can%26#39;t really help you out with that...
Innsbruck and Vienna are also great Austrian cities which I would suggest considering, as well as Prague - all of which are in proximity to Salzburg (but again, Prague is much further)
Good luck in your decision and hope this helps a bit...

First of all, Salzburg and Munich are not really similar. The layout is completely different!
What about Vienna? It is only short ride (around ~2h40min) apart from Salzburg. Trains depart more often than hourly.

And don%26#39;t use Rail Europe - they are horrendously expensive and typically charge up to 100% more than the %26#39;real%26#39; price.
And for train times/routeplanning it is better to use something reliable and less confusing such as the link that Mikey posted above or www.idos.cz both of which cover the whole of Europe.
Prague isn%26#39;t really feasible from Salzburg - it takes over 7 hours by direct train, less if you change a few times on the way.
All tickets can be bought on the day of travel.

Excuse me, but what is confusing about the ÖBB website? It is much more user-friendly than the Czech Website where society news are published I am not interested in.
|||
Nothing is confusing about it - read my post again!
I actually recommend the use of the oebb site as it is far less confusing than that of Rail Europe - my personal preference is idos, but I don%26#39;t look at any of the adverts (are there any?)

You are right! I am sorry....

Unless you%26#39;ll be able to devote more time to Venice in the foreseeable future, I%26#39;d recommend going to Venice without hesitating.
Munich and Vienna are both somewhat closer to Salzburg and comparable to each other in terms of size, museums, culture, etc. Both certainly deserve a visit. Salzburg is smaller than Munich or Vienna and will be very quiet when you%26#39;ll be there. If the weather is nice, try to get out of Salzburg and explore the lake district a bit.
As to Venice, it is unique, one of the greatest cities to see in Europe and would certainly rank much higher on my priority-list than Munich or Vienna (I%26#39;d actually prefer Vienna of the latter two). Therefore, I%26#39;d take the opportunity and go for Venice. The train ride is longer, but very scenic during day. There is a direct overnight train as well, during day you have to change trains once, but no problem.

Ditto the above - there was a bit of a discussion about this earlier on. Needless to say, I would recommend going by train, even if others don%26#39;t!
Don%26#39;t use rail europe.
