5 hours in Vienna

Hello everyone,

We will have a 5 hours stopover in Venna between our flights in the beginning of August. Want to get at least a glimpse of the city. I looked thru the boards and found some great advice, but still have some questions.

First of all we arriving at 17.55 and leaving at 10.55. How early or late does it get dark in the Vienna this time of the year? Is it warm enough in the evening for just a t-shirt, or should we bring a light jacket?

I understand that CAT is the fastest way to get to the city. But I noticed that it runs every 30 min. So, if we miss one, we should be better off taking S bahn than waiting. How often do those run?

To see the most interesting part of the city, can we walk there from Wien Mitte, or do we need to use other transportation? And maybe it would be wiser just to have taxi take us to the first place of interest and go from there?

I am trying to plan a route for us to go (with so little time, if we go in the wrong direction, we are done and lost), but can%26#39;t find a map which shows both train stations and places of interest. Does anyone know if one exists online or in the book stores?

Thank you very much for your help, and if anyone thinks about something else we should know, it would be greatly appreciated.

I think that you make a small error regarding arrival and departure times. Assume you reverse them and arrive at 10:55 and depart 17:55 ( 5:55 P. M. ) It should not be dark until about 20:30 or a little later ( 6:30 PM ) so no trouble.

Midlle of summer - should be warm for shirt.

For a city map this will also help you locate the CAT and S Bahn Wien Mitte station and city center.

the CAT site

www.cityqairporttrain.com

click on Wien Info - you can print the map.

This site also gives CAT info schedule.

Many times the SBhan follows the Cat by 4-5 minutes later.

From the station - a short 5 minute walk to the Ring - take the streetcar#1 or 2 for a quick city tour.

Other alternative is the airport transfer bus to Schwedensplatz/ Morzinplatz - every 30 minutes - trip takes about 25 minutes - 6 euro- the stop is in city center - direct access to the streetcars#1 and #2

Thank you very much Vertical for your help. I checked my tickets and we getting there at 5.55PM (17.55) and leaving at 10.55PM, viving us exactly 5 hours in the evening.

So, can you please clarify, when does get dark at 20.30 (8.30) or 18.30 (6.30PM)? I am a little bit confused.

Thanks for the link to the map. It is very helpful. Would you suggest we take a ride on street car all the way around, or go to some stop and come back? Can you please tell me how much time that would take, it is really hard to judge the distance by the map. Is it possible to ride lets say to the Opera theater and walk back? And if take a street car, how and where can we buy tickets.

Thanks again for your advice.

Sorry for the mention of 6:30 . here , we use the 24 hour timings - thus you depart at 10:55 PM - here 22:55.

It should begin to be dark about 20:30.

I would take the streetcar#1 - runs clockwise - in the direction of car traffic. on the Ringstrasse.

You can buy single tickets or others (if you believe you will use public transport more than 1 time) in the main floor of Wien Mitte from an automatic machine- be certain to validate them as you enter the streetcar- You will see a blue validation box near to the door as you enter the car. Just insert the card and the machine will stamp it.

I would take this car#1 along the Ringstrasse passing the Imperial Hotel, Opera House, Hofburg Palace the Fine Arts and Nhistory Museum, Parlament, to the Rathaus ( City Hall) on left side with the Burg Theater on the right side. Then get off as fewer good sights further on. This trip on the streetcar may take about 10-15 minutes.

If you wish stop in at the famous Cafe Landtmann for some pastry or a drink. It is just next to the Burg Theater.

From there you can make a nice walk through the center of the city- Volksgarten, Heldenplatz, Hofburg Palace, Kohlmarkt, Graben, Stephansdom ( walking time 20 minutes or much more if you linger at the sights and then depending on the time you have - take the U-3 subway at the front of Stephansdom back to Landstrasse/ Wien Mitte ( perhaps a 5 minute ride ) or walk back if time permits.( perhaps 15 minutes)

A quick visit but you see a lot.

enjoy the quick visit.

Just consider that you need to plan some time cushions for deboarding/boarding and transportation incl. eventual waiting time. Vienna Airport is not that big so no worries about rushing to the gate - safety inspections are done AT the gate and not concentrated if departing from one of the jetway concourses (A,C).

Have fun!

Thank you both Vertical and Mikey for great advice. I am going to print CAT schedule from the website and have it with me. If we decide to take U3 rather than walk, can we get tickets by the stop, or should we be prepared and buy them at Wien Mitte?

Ticket vending machines at every station!

Thanks guys. Can%26#39;t wait to get there
