Hotel/Pension quagmire! Help!!

My family and I (myself(27), my mom and my brother(20) ) are visiting Austria for 2 days in early July (we leave in a week!!) en route to visit family in Slovenia. I was put in charge of finding a hotel/pension/place-to-stay and I%26#39;m finding it hard to decide on the perfect place.

What we need: My mother wants to stay in the inner city area, right smack-dab in the middle of it all. We prefer it to be under $200 USD per night. I%26#39;d prefer A/C (because its gonna be hot in July right??) but could do with fans and definitly non-smoking rooms (I have bad allergies and asthma).

My problem: The pensions I was looking at (Madara 2, Vera, Mozart) are in the price range, include breakfast but don%26#39;t seem to have A/C or non-smoking rooms. How important is A/C in July in Vienna? And how have other non-smokers made out in Vienna hotels that allow smoking??

The hotels I%26#39;m looking at (Linder Am Belvedere, Hotel Atlantis, Continental Hotel,Courtyard by Marriott Vienna Schoenbrunn) mostly seem to have A/C, some seem to have non-smoking rooms while others don%26#39;t, don%26#39;t include breakfast (and breakfast if they have it is expeeeeeeeeeensive), and don%26#39;t have the %26quot;charm%26quot; of the smaller pensions.

I guess this really comes down to a couple questions: Is A/C important in July? And should I choose a more authentic pension to stay at or a more impersonal hotel (that has other features I want)? I%26#39;m really torn on this, yet I don%26#39;t have much time to book a place to stay. I%26#39;m hoping someone (or some people) on this forum can help me out!

lately the temperatures have been very high here.

The prognosis says the high temperatures will continue in July. 30-35 grad has not been uncommon latly.

Air conditioning is really a good thing - especially if you are accustomed to it or have respiratory distress.

The pensions you mention- madara2, Vera etc are not %26quot; smack- dab %26quot; in the city center.

For 3 people 200 USD per night limits your choices. This relates to about 130-133 euro.

Thus you must think about what is the best priority.

The Lindner is airconditioned , has non smoking rooms and location is not that bad- not far from the Ringstrass and Belvedere Palace.

Only you can ´decide what is best within your budget.

Thank you Vertical! I know our options are limited, and after reading about how %26quot;smokey%26quot; Vienna is (for a non-smoker) and how hot it is there right now, I think my options got even more limited. I%26#39;m leaning towards the Lindner a lot, it looks very nice from the photos.

Well, old-style pensions often don%26#39;t have aircondition as it is hard to incorporate.

July can be hot and humid here, therefore an aircondition is recommendable if you don%26#39;t get a room with high ceilings facing the North side of the premises.

Vienna can get warm in the summer, in some recent years it has been downright hot.

I%26#39;m suggesting the Hotel Haydn, which is %26quot;right smack dab%26quot; downtown on Mariahilferstrasse, with easy access to the excellent public transit network and which advertises that it is %26quot;partially airconditioned%26quot;.

Although I have stayed at this hotel 4 times, each visit was in the winter, so I can%26#39;t vouch for the airconditioning.

Check the website http://www.haydn-hotel.at/

You can call or email them, their customer service has always been excellent in my experience.

My family and I always enjoyed the excellent included breakfast and there are quite a few moderately priced (and very good) restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel.

Good luck!

I will offer you the little information I can as I am sure you are anxious about finding something. We just returned from Vienna and stayed at the Pertschy in Room 216. This pension is very much in the middle of it all, just off the Graben. There was no AC but it was a huge room that had lots of windows in three different directions so there was a lot of air movement. The room was absolutely nonsmoking, although some smoke drifted up from the restaurant below. With the windows open it was no problem, and we are very sensitive to cigarette smoke. If you and your mom could share the huge bed in Room 216 you could get your brother a smaller room in the same private alcove section of the pension. (separate outside door to that section) If you don%26#39;t mind sharing, Room 216 is plenty big enough to accommodate a fold-out bed if they would provide it. It has tons of storage space, a loveseat and two chairs, and a brand-new bathroom. You would be very comfortable in that room. The Pertschy provides a nice breakfast.

We have also stayed at Le Meridian. It is on the Ring and also a very excellent location. They don%26#39;t have a lot of breakfast packages, but the mini-bar in the rooms is complimentary. However; the frosted glass wall that separates the bathroom from the bedroom might not be enough privacy in your situation.

We spent three weeks in Europe both of the last summers. A miracle has occurred in Germany- the nonsmoking laws are up and running and most effective. We were in Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. The one and only place smoking was still an issue was in Vienna. Hopefully Austria will soon join the rest of the world in controlling this health hazard. It is the only negative thing about Vienna/ Austria.

I hope this helps.

We baked at the Pension Pertschy in July 2006. Baked baked baked.

We had a choice of keeping the many windows open and listening to the clomp clomp clomp of the once charming horse-and-carriages or keeping the windows closed and dying of heatstroke. Even with earplugs there was no relief from the noise. My three year-old daughter used the bidet to cool off her feet. We eventually got a fan and it barely helped.

We always stay at lower-priced B%26amp;Bs or pensions (except when hubby%26#39;s business pays -- %26#39;nother story) but this infamous trip to Vienna convinced us to cough up the extra dough to pay for a room with AC whenever in a large central European city.
