Hi
I%26#39;ve just noticed that the small pension hotel we are booked into near Salzburg has a sauna. The hotel only has about 8 rooms.
Please can locals confirm the %26#39;dress%26#39; rules for sauna, I understand that many large saunas in Austria ban shorts or trunks and that it%26#39;s quite normal to be in a mixed sex sauna and naked?
Would this rule apply to a small hotel with mainly foreign guests? I reckon most visitors would probably expect to wear trunks.
I would certainly go in with trunks if not sure but don%26#39;t want to offend anyone with or without :-)
Thanks

It is likely that you will sit therein alone. Just eight rooms are not the base for a congestion of the sauna. And if the weather is that bad keeping guests in the hotel, nobody will blame you if you wear anything down. If you wanna be assured - why don%26#39;t you wrap a towel around your waist? Nobody will check your intimate area!

:-) I%26#39;m not worried about being %26quot;checked%26quot;, I would just like to know form just in case 2 or 3 people turn up at the same time, quite possible at night after walking etc.
Wearing a towel is fine, or trunks, I don%26#39;t care just trying not to do the wrong thing in another country.

We went to Seefeld for my daughters wedding in January and in our hotel it was ok to wear trunks bikinis etc ,but when she went to her honeymoon hotel in Obergurgle this was not acceptable they just wore towels.

So it seems the %26#39;form%26#39; is to wear trunks when unsure and see what others are do, if you are wrong go take them off and grab a towel?
I guess it%26#39;s less embarrassing to have the form wrong by wearing trunks than being the only without them.
I know this sounds a silly question for local Austrians but it is a big issue for a Brit. Reason being that if we went into a mixed sauna naked in U.K. we could well be arrested.

What is the big question-
Just ask at the pension when you arrive-
Also many places have international type signs near to the doorway of the sauna with requirements including mode or lack of attire.
|||
Here you won%26#39;t get arrested because of nudity in a sauna. We all know the United States for their strong laws in regard to nudity, but I didn%26#39;t know that the UK is so conservative in this term.
You can wear a G-String what would probably be a compromise. :-)
Once again, I would wrap a smaller towel around your waist as it is done by many persons who don%26#39;t wear anything down. If I enter or leave a sauna I always do it this way.

It might not be a big question to you, because you don%26#39;t live in U.K.
I would just like to be clear in my mind, like to have some input and local advice. Yes, I can ask at the hotel but it would be nice to know and not arrive totally ignorant of local custom. That is why people use places like TA, most anything travel related can be found when you arrive IMO.:-)
If they have signs then great, I%26#39;m not sure that they will, hence the question.

Thanks for the wrapped towel tip.
Yes, It would be a huge scandal in U.K. if a man was to enter a mixed sauna naked. People would assume it is sexually motivated, the man would be in big trouble and charged with indencent exposure.
That%26#39;s how it is here - no joke!

Usually we don%26#39;t wear anything in saunas and certainly, you wouldn%26#39;t get into trouble walking into a sauna nakedly, because that%26#39;s standard here. You should always sit on a towel.
If you%26#39;re walking in wearing your shorts, you%26#39;ll soon realize if others are naked and looking a bit disapproving - then get rid of them.
If weather is rainy and other guests are not Austrian, things get a bit more complicated, because by sticking to local custom, you might offend other guests not familiar with local custom ;-)
Altogether, I%26#39;d wear a towel and use it just to sit on it if either I%26#39;m alone upon arrival or other guests are naked. If non-naked people are already in the sauna, I%26#39;d just keep wearing the towel.
Good luck

Nemorino,
Thanks for the clear advice, I%26#39;ll follow it.
