Tunnel restrictions?

Are there any restrictions for campers carrying liquid gas canisters when passing through tunnels in Austria?

Can%26#39;t find an answer in the web and would appreciate if somebody knew and informed me.

Thanks in advance!

I do not have a camper but believe all flammables ( liquid gas containers included)are forbidden in the major tunnels due to safety concerns.

Many short avalanche or snow tunnels exist . I beieve the gas canisters are no trouble there.

But look to the following web site

www.asfinag.at

this will provide much good information regarding highways , safety etc.

Also note that you must have a vignette ( highway use permit ) for your vehicle.

this information on this site too.

Thanks!

I know about the vignette. Actually my wife and I have travelled through Austria quite a few times (our favourite summer destination!) and we have also passed through most of the big european tunnels without ever being aware of any notices re such a prohibition. However, I %26#39;ve always wondered as I %26#39;ve never read anything clear about this matter (Surely hundreds of campers/caravans passing through the tunnels every day!?...)

Check this thread out -- but you need to speak German. Someone listed every mountain pass and tunnel in Switzerland and Austria with respect to

driving these with campers. Great site.

I did some other research and could not find any restrictions regarding camping fuel etc. Most trucks carry more dangerous substances.

There are significant restrictions for commercial tanker trucks, but this does not concern you.

Here are the boring details, again in German.

According to this, you have nothing to worry with respect to camping fuel, extra gasoline etc.

Vertical will be able to corroborate this, once he has read the piece.

Thank you both for taking the time...

Though unfortunately I don%26#39;t understand german, I now feel somewhat more relaxed as to the possibility of having been doing something very silly...

The websites given do not really give good info- most about mountain passes.

I called directly to my auto club here in Austria

OAMTC. They a good source of information - usually very accurate.

They advise no restrictions on gas canisters etc.

perhaps the signs I remember refer to oversized and hazardous materials.

This clubs website is a good source of info on driving including current road works , stallys of traffic, and today most important lowest gas prices in given areas.

You can also buy good maps of Austria and nearby countries too. offices in bigger places throughout Austria.

Also remember if you are traveling through Slovenia- after July 1 , you will need a vignette( road tax sticker ) there for driving on autobahns and major highways.

To be available at gas stations , some post offices etc.

Best to buy one as fine for driving without is 00-800 euro.

6 month sticker is 35 euro.Do not know about shorter term stickers.

Thanks again, vertical!

Especially for taking the trouble to call your auto club, also for informing me about the vignette in Slovenia! Yes, we plan to cross Slovenia -for the first time- coming from Venice and Trieste, before entering Austria (How did you know? LOL...)
