2 Week round trip

Hi all,

We are planning a two week trip around Austria for September, and I was hoping people who%26#39;ve been there or live there might give an insight into our itinerary to see are we spending too much time or not enough in each place.

Basically we arrive in Vienna on Sunday 31st August, spend three days and depart for Linz via St. Poltan on Wednesday. We stay there for one night and depart for Salzburg on Thursday spending three days before heading to Innsbruck on Sunday for two days. Was thinking of spending one day on Wednesday in Zell am See (arriving Tuesday evening) before heading to Graz on Thursday. Our flight back home departs Vienna at 11.40am on Sunday 14th, so was wondering should we head back to Vienna on Saturday evening, or would it be driveable on Sunday morning?

We (my husband and myself) will be travelling with our son who will be 13 months, and I will also be 5 months pregnant, so we don%26#39;t want to spend too much time in the car, and unfortunately some side trips hiking up mountains won%26#39;t really be possible. I would love some suggestions of things that we definitely should not miss, and any thoughts on the itinerary in general.

Also was thinking of seeing some glacier%26#39;s - is this possible with child and pregnant lady!!

many thanks for any suggestions (and sorry if this is a bit long!)

I really like your itinerary as you have included a lot of Austrian cities which should not be missed. Most only visit Vienna and Salzburg, but you also embedded Linz and Graz - two really cosy cities with great atmosphere.

If you are interested in pictures I took of Linz:

I recommend to make a day trip out of Salzburg to the Salzkammergut Region (=Lake Region), where the picturesque village of Hallstatt is located by the lake. You could also visit the lovely town of Gmunden and go aboard a vessel to tour the Traunsee. That would be memorable! Normally I suggest to visit the ice caves in Obertraun very close to Hallstatt, but because of your baby it could be exhausting (and even forbidden)!

Zell am See is a great village by a lake! You will like it!

The drive from Graz to Vienna Int%26#39;l Airport shouldn%26#39;t take more than 2 hours. If you leave Graz at 7:30a, you would still have a little time cushion. From Graz to Wien you take motorway A2 and before you enter Vienna, you need to change to motorway S1 to Schwechat (or motorway A4 to Budapest).

Many thanks for your reply Mikey. Had a look at those photo%26#39;s of Linz and it does look beautiful, such fabulous architecture.

Also thanks for the info on getting to the airport on Sunday - good to know we won%26#39;t have to drive back to Vienna for just one night, and can explore more of Lower Austria on Saturday. Am disappointed about the ice caves, but kind of expected it :(

Had Halstatt in mind for a day trip from people%26#39;s reactions to it on here, so good to know it%26#39;s endorsed by natives too! Didn%26#39;t know about Gmunden, so will look that up.

Well now comes the fun of actually booking hotels and day trips - no doubt more questions to come in the near future!

thanks again

I think I did not clearly describe the route from Graz to Vienna Airport (VIE). You definitely have to change to motorway S1 before you enter Vienna. S1 leads to the town of Schwechat and the respective airport. I just wanted you to look for designators like motorway A4 as the S1 merges into the A4. Motorway A4 is the main corridor from Vienna to Budapest.
