best way from Munich airport to Innsbruck

I will be arriving at MUC at 1530 on July 3 and wonder if the best way to travel to Innsbruck that afternoon is by train or is a shuttle better. Any particular Shuttle Service?? Do I need reservation?? Cost?? I will traveling alone this trip. Thanks for your help.

A single ticket (fully flexible) is € 40 oneway. There%26#39;s no discount.

More information at: www.bahn.de --%26gt; choose your language

There%26#39;s also a transfer service... airport-transfer.com/htm/transfer_prices_200…

Take the train as you don%26#39;t need to prepare anything in advance. Just buy the ticket at the airport! At least one transfer necessary (Munich Main Station or Munich-East Station). If you have more time you can take the slower train route through the Karwendel Mountain Area for great scenery. This train calls at Garmisch-Patenkirchen and Mittenwald, villages you have probably heard of. For this itinerary you have to transfer at Munich-Pasing. For more information on schedules and routes visit:

Price between 35€ and 40€

Our scientific test says take the shuttle!

We arrived at MUC on the same plane with my hubby%26#39;s colleagues. Some had reserved limo service, others took the train and we had the shuttle (Four Seasons link above).

Results:

1. Shuttle big winner:

Door to door service!!!!! (Well, almost -- got dropped off as close as we could in Innsbruck%26#39;s pedestrian Altstadt.) Cost only three or four Euros more than the train (and probably less if you factored in a taxi ride in Innsbruck). Arrived at our hotel at the same time as the limo folks. We left MUC first and dropped off people along the way. Our daughter fell asleep on the drive and I nodded off.

You reserve in advance, which is wonderful since Four Seasons monitors your flight%26#39;s arrival and anticipates your exit from baggage. We had a van waiting for us.

2. Train big loser:

Took much longer and change of trains is required in Munich proper. Then you might want to take a taxi from Innsbruck%26#39;s station to your hotel, which adds more suitcase schlepping and expense. Our colleagues grumbled about the experience, especially about dragging luggage from platform to platform after a tiring transatlantic flight.

Note: One colleague tried to reserve a spot on Four Seasons%26#39; shuttle when we all arrived. Their vans were full for the next two hours and therefore could not accommodate him.

If you take line S8, every 20 mins from Munich Airport to Munich East and change there for Innsbruck it%26#39;s a much smaller station than Munich Hbf and easier to change trains. It%26#39;s also a slightly shorter route.

|||

Train which fits with your flight arrival time is line S8, depart Munich airport 1702 hrs, change Munich East, arrive Innsbruck 1920 hrs. You should have plenty of time for this train, if so I%26#39;d suggest your taking the S8 service 20 mins earlier thus having 28 mins for connection at Munich East instead of 8 mins (more relaxed if you have luggage etc). I%26#39;ve never had a problem with the 8 min connection....but I know the station layout and which platform (track) to head for.

If there is a shuttle with the same price and faster delivery, then take the shuttle van. I didn%26#39;t know which services are offered at Munich. Now it is good to know! Anyway, I prefer to be fully independant - even if it is slightly slower. The S-Bahn from Munich Airport is very modern, clean and fast. Nevertheless it takes 45 minutes to the city centre as MUC is far outside. Fortunately, in your case, the airport is North of Munich City and Innsbruck South of Munich, so at least you don%26#39;t waste time by heading into the wroong direction.

Mikey, I had a bad experience with a shuttle company a few years ago. We were on an organised walking tour and a shuttle minibus had been arranged for the group. The driver had us worried by driving at 150 km per hr on the autobahn, barely 10 metres behind next vehicle in heavy traffic.

Since then we have always opted for the train; it%26#39;s just a 28 minute trip to Munich East on line S8 from the airport.

Our shuttle was very professional and very organized. The van even had a car seat for our three year-old daughter. After our driver picked us up, he picked up three or four other people at another terminal and off we went. No speeding or anything. My daughter even fell asleep on the ride, it was so relaxing and comfortable. We struggled to stay awake since the drive was very scenic.

My husband%26#39;s conference organizers%26#39; recommended the shuttle, which they use all the time since they work at the university in Innsbruck.

I lived in Germany and have visited friends in Munich several times, sometimes arriving at MUC. I also prefer to transfer at Munich Ost when I take the train, which is almost always. (Yet even a change at Ost requires a change of platforms, which means going downstairs and then upstairs again.)

But still, the shuttle was much more comfortable and easier. In the end it cost us less than the train option since we would have needed a taxi from the train station in Innsbruck.

The shuttle costs 42 Euros (72 return) while the train costs 40.20 Euros.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I ended up taking the train from the Munich airport to the central train station and then the train to Innsbruck. Total cost for the round trip from Central Station to Innsbruck was 77 euros and about 9 euros from airport to central station. I had forgotten about the Lufthansa Bus which I think is a little faster and only makes one stop and costs about the same for trip from the Airport to Central Station. Turned out to be really easy with great connections. Thanks again.
