Ryanair Flights to Salzburg

According to the Salzburg newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten Ryanair is cancelling a 84 flights to Salzburg from the UK. The affected period is from 4th November until 19th December. While I can%26#39;t understand all of the German text it looks as though anyone planning to travel from the UK at that time should check with the airline.

Thanks for that Liz. I%26#39;ve been watching their website as they have not put out the winter schedule from LPL yet and I fear it won%26#39;t happen this year. Is LPL mentioned in the article? Looks as though we northerners are back to Thomsonfly from MAN only after a couple of good years with both BA and Ryanair operating. The Thomsonfly flights out of MAN stop in October/November too, but resume again for the ski season. I assume people are cutting back and they are struggling to fill the flights.

That%26#39;s a shame - I just took a look at the Ryanair site and indeed, it seems that there will be no flights from Stansted to Salzburg at all during that period, 4 Nov-19 Dec.

People planning to visit the Salzburg Christmas markets from the UK may find this inconvenient. The only other direct flights to Salzburg from the UK are British Airways out of Gatwick, or (I think) Flybe out of Southampton. Some charter companies such as Monarch also operate flights from Gatwick to Salzburg during the ski season, I believe, but I don%26#39;t know if this would include the pre-Christmas period.

As an alternative for UK travellers, you can fly to Munich airport and get the train to Salzburg (about 2.5 hours). I do that quite often because now I live a long way from Stansted and it%26#39;s more convenient to make the Munich-Salzburg trip than Oxford-Stansted! If you buy a Bayern ticket (19 euros for a single one way, 27 euros for a party of 2-5 people travelling together one way) that will cover your travel from the airport to the centre of Munich by Schnellbahn and on to Salzburg by train, so it%26#39;s not too expensive.

I imagine the tourist trade in Salzburg will suffer because of these flight cancellations - judging by hotel prices in the city during the pre-Christmas period, it is one of their busiest seasons. It%26#39;s a shame because I would definitely recommend Salzburg as a Christmas market destination - the markets are more traditional and picturesque than those in Vienna (though there%26#39;s lots of other things to do in Vienna, of course!)

I%26#39;ve also read that Ryanair cancelled most flights to Salzburg.

There is a flight from Stansted to Linz, which is very easy connected to Salzburg by train (travel time about 1 hour). Much easier than Munich.

We flew into Munich a couple of weeks ago (and have done this is the past before the flights to SZG from MAN started). We always hire a car anyway and drive down to Altenmarkt which is ~45minutes beyond Salzburg. The drive from Munich is easy enough but traffic very unpredictable. It can be done in little over 2 hours, but 2.5 hours is more common and %26gt;%26gt;3 hours in the worst traffic of the winter or summer seasons. Of course, if the flights to SZG decrease the prices into Munich will also creep up.

I took a look at the article Liz mentioned and it seems that Ryanair are objecting to the %26#39;slot costs%26#39; at SZG which they say are among the highest in Europe. They have approached the airport about cost reduction but little can de done as this is regulated by the authorities. I suppose a significant drop in tourism may lead to a review of the airport charges - no doubt what Ryanair are trying to bring about.
