We are planning a trip to Prague and Vienna. The first part of the trip is a tour that ends in Vienna. We are thinking of renting a car in Vienna and spend about a week traveling through the countryside and ending up back in Vienna for our trip home. We know we want to spend a couple of days in and around Salzburg. Three questions:
Is Munich doable and how long do you suggest being there? What are the must-sees?
If we want to make decisions as we go along how difficult will it be to find hotels or other accommodation as we go rather than planning it all out with reservations in advance?
With only five full days available, how far afield do you suggest we go. We are wondering if we could get in parts of Switzerland or is that too much to aim for?
I%26#39;m looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

It is a common tendency to plan as much as possible as you don%26#39;t know when you could ever come back to this part of the world. I would not go too much afield as there is so much to see in the Vienna and Salzburg vicinities.
Munich is doable from Salzburg. The must-sees in my opinion are the central district with Marienplatz, Stachus, Isar, English Garden, Maximileum and other sites outside the city centre such as Nymphenburg Palace and Olympia Park.
Normally it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem to find a accommodation, but be aware that here we don%26#39;t have Motels along a main street flagging any vacancies.
Larger villages often have a tourist information center which can assist you.
I would spend a few days in Vienna, the former residence of the emperor, where you can find grand architecture and lifestyle, world-famous operas and music halls.

Hi,
As for reservations, it really depends where and WHEN you are going. Salzburg to Munich is 2 hours. From Vienna to just see Salzburg and Munich, a car really isn%26#39;t needed. Switzerland is a stretch, but anything is possible, I guess.
Not knowing what your looking to see/experience makes helping difficult.
To see the Alps, spectacular scenery, picturesque villages and towns and a castle or two, my suggestions would be:
Rent a car in Vienna, base in Berchtesgaden area (we love Ramsau) which is less than 1/2 hour drive from Salzburg.
From here, you could easily see:
Salzburg (1/2 hour drive)
Berchtesgaden/Konigsee/Jenner cable car,Hitler%26#39;s Eagles Nest etc. (15 min. drive)
%26quot;Mad%26quot; King Ludwig%26#39;s outstanding Herrenchiemsee Palace (1 hr drive)
Hallstatt and the lake district (1 1/2 hr drive)
Burg Werfen/Werfen Castle (less than a 1 hr. drive)
Bad Reichenhall is a beautiful old town (20 min. drive)
Munich (2 hr. drive)
Zell am See (1 1/2 hr drive)
For a longer day, you could also drive the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse (stunning). It starts just below Zell am See.

A good website for the Berchtesgaden area is:

Hope this helps get you started.

Thanks, you both have helped. As for what we are interested in--scenery, of course, but also music history and historical sites in general. Any suggestions for getting the best bang for our bucks in those last two? I%26#39;m pretty sure the scenery will wow us no matter which direction we go. :-)
