%26#39;ve been researching pensions, hotels and apartments in Vienna for a week%26#39;s stay this September. I have lot of faith in Trip Advisor.
My criteria - inside %26#39;the ring%26#39; so I can walk or tram everywhere. I%26#39;m an older (well over 50) woman, traveling alone. I%26#39;m a painter and will spend most of my time looking at art in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the drawings in Albertina and anywhere else there are paintings.
I%26#39;m looking for a room that would be under 100 Euros a night, and reviewed on this site with
no disgusted posts about noise or unfriendly staff. I have no problem with WC%26#39;s down the hall, or small quarters.
I emailed my top five. Two are already booked for the time period and three have a room available. I am deciding between Pension Pertschy, Pension Lumes %26amp; Co, Pension Domizil.
Pertschy and Domizil are similar in price, but Domizil warns %26#39;there may be restoration work%26#39; going on at that time.
Lumes is significantly less expensive but I can only find two traveler reposrts on this site, which concerns me.
I would very much appreciate thoughts from the travelers/forum leaders here.
Danke!

As a solo female traveller, between Pertschy and Domizil I would prefer Pertschy. I%26#39;ve stayed there often and found the service very good - they%26#39;re reliable and I like that in a hotel! Domizil struck me as expensive (Venere quote EUR120 for a single at Domizil, which is too much in my book, though it sounds like you got a better price) and the location is not as convenient if you want to go to the KHM and the Albertina. It%26#39;s still within walking distance of course, but Pertschy is *easy* walking distance to both.
Pension Lumes is new. I have booked to stay there in September so will be curious to see what it is like. It seems quite small (only about 5 rooms). Again the location on the Weihburggasse is a little bit out of your way for seeing art. There%26#39;s some nice restaurants round that way but it%26#39;s a bit further to the main sights.
All three would be fine for walking around at night -you should be fine in the Innere Stadt (and indeed pretty much everywhere).
Otherwise - did you try Pension Nossek www.pension-nossek.at ? They are just round the corner from Pertschy on the Graben but quite a bit cheaper (about EUR79 pn for a spacious ensuite single, some rooms with shared bathrooms are cheaper). I%26#39;ve stayed there and found it very pleasant and a good bargain for the area. There%26#39;s also a new place next door to Pertschy, Pension A und A - I%26#39;ve not tried it yet but would be curious to know what it%26#39;s like. I think the prices are similar to Pertschy. Their website is http://www.pensionaunda.at/en/index.html
I hope that helps!

Thanks Roley! that%26#39;s just the kind of first hand information and suggestions I hoped for.
I%26#39;m going to checkout Nossek- it%26#39;s well situated and their posted room rate is very competitive.
A%26amp;A has snazzier looking rooms on their site, but I%26#39;ll take comfort over style any day. I%26#39;m emailing them to though. It%26#39;s always good to have alternatives.
Thanks again!

Glad to be of help! I agree about the Pension A und A - the industrial chic thing never did much for me! The pension seems to offer quite good facilities, but the overall effect is kind of spartan hem hem.
I should have mentioned one thing about Nossek - they don%26#39;t take credit cards, so I always pay my bill there in cash. There%26#39;s an ATM opposite the front door so I just use that when I come to pay. For a longer stay, they may ask for a partial deposit which can be paid by bank transfer (these are becoming easier and less expensive between Europe and the UK but I don%26#39;t know whether that%26#39;s the case for the US). It%26#39;s a bit inconvenient for people coming from further afield, but the smaller family pensions throughout Austria often won%26#39;t take credit cards because the fees are high. Nossek is substantially cheaper than every other hotel or pension in that part of the city, and I%26#39;ve noticed that the owners are exceptionally helpful in providing information and advice for new visitors to the city, so I think the advantages of staying there outweigh the slight inconvenience.

Hi Roley. I heard back from Pension Nossek and they had only partial availability for my dates, so I reluctantly am going to choose elsewhere. I really had a good feeling about the place.
Didn%26#39;t hear back from A%26amp;A, but don%26#39;t expect I can afford them. So it%26#39;s between Pertschy and Lumes- which is exactly half the cost of Pertschy. If I stay at Lumes I%26#39;ll let you know how it works out.
My question is about sending them my credit card information by email - have there been any mishaps with that or is it reasonably secure?
Also - I plan to visit many museums and some of them multiple times. Can you recommend a museum card that I can purchase to help with that expense? I%26#39;ve sen there%26#39;s a card for cheap transportation, but I%26#39;ll be on foot generally.
Thanks again.

Hope you don%26#39;t mind me jumping in. I would not email credit card details under any circumstances. I would rather telephone them through as the chances of a phone call being intercepted are relatively slight. If you must email then send at least two separate ones ones with partial numbers on each. Never ever email your card number and security code on the same email.

Thank you Norman, your advice is much appreciated.
I was uneasy about it, but then I was born before the microwave. Nowadays I blithely order from sites like Amazon.com and have come to expect to do business over the internet, but this seemed less secure.
I%26#39;ll call them this afternoon or send two emails.
All best,
Va

Although a while back since I visited this lovely City..I, too, stayed at the Pertschy..can%26#39;t be beat location-wise..super friendly staff and clean!! totally enjoyed!

I visit Vienna a couple/three times every year, and my address is always the Pension Pertschy.
One hint: They have two categories of single rooms: the regular (small) or the larger single rooms. I pay the extra and go for the larger single (de Luxe). It%26#39;s worth it!
Also, if the Pertschy is ever full, try their sister pension, the Christina. It is located right behind Schwedenplatz, which is also a great, central location.

VA Painter- don%26#39;t know if you have decided yet but thought I would share this most current information. We were at the Pertschy two weeks ago (forever grateful to you for this tip Roley). It was just lovely. Our room felt ever so much like a palace accommodation...soaring ceiling, glistening chandelier, and enough space to dance about if one should choose to do so. Of course, it was a double and probably at the deluxe end of their categories. I have a quibble with previous posters who complained about the lack of modernization. In our room (216) everything had clearly been very recently updated. The bathroom tile was clearly spanking new, and the Grohe fixtures high class indeed. The lovely armoire which separated the bedroom from the entry hall looked antique; but those European hinges and dovetailed drawers gave it away as brand-new and not inexpensive furniture. I much prefer wood floors, and was happy that our room was one that did not have carpeting.
To be frank, the walkways are a bit rickety and shabby, and my husband was a bit nervous that they would give way beneath us. Not so, they are clearly as stout as we are. Our room location was a bit noisy, but then again, we prefer to sleep with windows open. We slept deeply and well here despite the noise of clopping horses (most soothing to me) and clopping high heels (pretend it is horses).
When I made our online reservation I was very specific about what we wanted in a room. The staff paid close attention to that and made us an offer on a room that matched our needs exactly. For a single traveler I would think the huge advantage would be the central location just below your window, yet the completely secure and comfortable sanctuary within the pension environs.
