Mastercard/Visa

Would I be correct in assuming that Mastercard/Visa will be widely accepted in the shops/restaurants?

I would not entirely rely on plastic cash, but if a credit card is accepted, it is definitely VISA or MC.

Always check wether a shop/restaurant accepts CC.

In my experience, not in St Johann but in another small town, the credit card is accepted more widely than before. The majority of shops (clothes, sports etc) do accept credit cards these days but NOT food stores or supermarkets. Many of them (SPAR etc) still only take cash or local bank card with chip and PIN. Restaurants are a bit of a mix, most take them (especially if linked to a hotel) but in the mountain huts they are rarely taken. As the previous poster said, don%26#39;t assume they will accept them. You can always get cash from an ATM with a UK bank or credit card (although look out for the charges).

Normally - the smaller the shop or restaurant the more likely they will be not to accept credit cards- much due to commissions that must be paid.

larger places in major cities will be much more likely to accept both Mastercard and Visa.

Most tourist oriented establishments will.

Still many restaurants , even in Vienna only accept cash.

In touristy resorts , many places will accept credit cards- but you still find many excelent hotels only accept cash.

Many european people have the equivalent of a bank debit card and use this to pay normal costs such as hotel vacation stays, shopping including food markets etc.

Thus check prior to making a visit or purchase.

ATM machines are everywhere and it is always best to have some euro with you.
