From the train station in melk to the Abbey is probably a 10-15 minute walk- as you depart from the station you will walk downhill on good sidewalks - then a good uphill walk to the Abbey- some effort needed.
From the Abbey an easier walk as most is downhill - perhaps 15 minutes through the town- basically in a west or up stream direction - then turning right acroos a bigger road across a bridge then a short walk to the boat landing on the left side.
Dürnstein boat landing is on the promenede about the middle of town. You have a choice of relativelysteep stairs almost in front of the landing up into the center of town- watch steps can be a little slippery as they are mostly old stone 2 minutes- or you can walk perhaps 150 meters downstream and then turn left on an easier walkway into town. 5-7 minutes.
for the train station - walk out the east gate of Dürnstein - walking east you will come to a busy road - underpas available to go under it- then continuing past a parking lot on the right - a food market and apartments on the left - a short distance on the left you see a small stree up to the Train station ( Bahnhof in german ) I think a few direction signs along the route.
A small cafe at the train station.
total walk - 10 minutes- from town - 15 from boat station.
Very short ride to Krems- then a 100 meter walk to the connecting train to Vienna- usually a double deck train red and grey color on same or nearby track. Train will have small signs in some windows %26quot; Viena%26quot; schedules are coordinated for an easy transfer.
makes a nice day trip of varied activities. This area some of the best white wine in the world - have a glass or two.
