Travelling to Vienna from Graz

I will be staying near Graz this summer on holiday. and would like to visit Vienna. What is the best way to travel? We will be hiring a car but think we would prefer to travel by train. Would the train journey be advisable and what are the aprroximate costs

The train ride is nice as it passes the Semmering region which is mountainous. Furthemore, the railtrack in this region - built by Karl Ritter von Ghega - is proteced by the UNESCO.
