There is a very nice traditional restaurant (not touristy) with excellent food in the small village next to Kitzbuehel, in Aurach.
The name is Hallerwirt:

Kitzbuehel is very nice , there are many possibilities for walking, hiking, ...and there is the small lake Schwarzsee nearby as well.
Very beautiful is also the nearby area of the mountain Wilder Kaiser.

You can also make day trips to Innsbruck or Salzburg - train schedule info here:

Or to the Krimmler Waterfalls:

make sure you get your visitor card from your hotel, gives you discounts on lots of things including the chairlifts.
Worth going to the top of both the Hannakamn and the Kitlbuhlerhorn, both have great views, resturants etc.At the top of Hannakamn is a Skiing museum and in there is a downhill simulator, try it if you dare great fun.
there is a brass band concert in the main street on Friday nights (I think) we were visiting september last year and the concerts were finished by then.

BTW Schwarzsee is lovely and there are several walking paths in the area, you can buy a map with a little booklet explaining the walks,we did one round the Schwarzee and upto Kirchberg, had a beer and then got the train back (only about 10 minutes by train) most ebjoyable walk.
There is a realy nice resturant right on the lake a perfect place for a mid morning coffee or beer or if starting later a nice spot for lunch.I have a great pucture of the place on my office wall just to remind me how lovely the place was.
Whilst in Kitzbuhel we took day trips to the Grossglockner galcier ( with a shot stop in Sellan See),Innsbruck,Salzburg and The Eagles Nest at Berchesgaden.you can arrange these through local tour companies (Stoll or Strool or something like that based in Soll),but a couple of our day trips were included in our tour package through Voyages Jules Verne.

Thanks everyone,I have looked at the timetable for trains to Salzburg and it seems the train journey is over 2 hours from Kitzbuhel?
I would like to go to Zell and the Grossglockner glacier.
The rest of the time we will be walking around the immediate area including Scwarzsee and hopefully I will manage to get my husband to the top of the surrounding mountains on cable cars or Gondolas!
We are going with Crystal lakes but I prefer going with local tour companies on trips or better still on our own using local transport where possible.
My husband and I both passed our driving tests in Germany but I dont think we will have the courage to hire a car and drive on the mountain roads!

the Godolas can be quite %26quot;hairy%26quot; but they are not too bad and it is worth making the effort as the views from the top are fantastic, just tell your husband that if he is a brave little boy you will buy him a beer at the top.
Remember the sunscreen,it may feel cooler at the top of the mountains but the sun can be very fierce.

You can get the 4012 Post Bus from Kibuhel (depts train station 0837) to Lofer where there is a timed connection onto the 260 bus to Salzburg arriving 1050. A single fare from St Johann cost us 5.20 to Lofer and 7.10 from Lofer to Salzburg which was considerably cheaper than the train and also quicker.
