Mozart Dinner Concert - worth the ticket price?

On the verge of booking two student tickets to the Mozart Dinner Concert in Stiftskeller St. Peter for 22 December. We%26#39;re both under 26 and students so it%26#39;ll cost 33 euros per person. It feels like a lot of money as normally I wouldn%26#39;t spend that much on a meal while travelling in Europe, probably 20 euros maximum. Also I am conscous that I could get a student ticket to a Mozart opera in London for under fifteen pounds.

Is it worth it? I did a search on the forum and a number of posters think %26#39;yes%26#39;. I realise that it has been discussed (and recommended) quite a lot already but all opinions will be gratefully received.

The Baroque room where the dinner is held is spectacular. The tables are beautifully decorated with elaborate flowers. The music when we were there was lovely and the performers were great fun. I confess that we didn%26#39;t enjoy the meal and didn%26#39;t think it was worth the money, BUT we had the vegetarian option which was terrible. I think the meat option was veal, which I wouldn%26#39;t eat even if I was a meat-eater. If you%26#39;re OK with that sort of meal option then it might be OK for you. The wine they sell at the tables is also very expensive.

Despite not liking the food we enjoyed our evening, the atmosphere was wonderful. I imagine on the date you mention it would be even more so.

It%26#39;s impossible for me to say whether you should go or not. It is a lot of money but it%26#39;s an experience I wouldn%26#39;t have missed. Having said that 66 euros would buy you a couple of fabulous meals while you%26#39;re there. Sorry if I%26#39;ve made you even more confused.

Liz, thanks ever so much for your reply. I%26#39;m a vegetarian so I%26#39;ve paid special attention to what you thought about the food quality.

We were there in early October. The weather was great and the Mozart dinner was spectacular. We had a vegetarian at the table and she asked for the same meal, without meat. They gave her very generous portions of vegetables and TWO salads.

The performers leave while you are eating and go to another banquet room. They do not push the wine on you and we each had one glass. Price was reasonable for that area .

Our travel philosophy is that we may not pass this way again and made the most of it. We were also in Budapest, Vienna and Prague, but Salzburg was our favorite. Easy to get around on the bus - 1.6 Euro each way and very safe. We stayed on Ringstrasse in the Stiglbrau. Good hotel, wonderful Austrian food and friendly staff. It%26#39;s a short walk to Mirabell Gardens and Mozart%26#39;s residence. Little Ice Cream/Gelato shop on the way - less than one Euro for a great sweet treat.

Take plenty of pictures - everything is a photo op!

I am visiting Salzburg for 2 days. Nov-12 and Nov-13 with my wife and 2 kids (3 and 6 years). Planning to go to the Mozart Dinner Concert on one of those days.

Do you mind telling me where you stayed in Salzburg? I am trying to restrict to upto $150 for 1 quad room. Any suggestions for staying ??? I like some hotels but they are away from the city. I am leaning towards one of the following hotels...

Hotel Pension Adlerhof

Hotel Turnerwirt

Hotel Bergland

Any suggestions, anyone ??

Thanks.

I just check on Orbitz and they have a special of 74 USD at Stieglbrau.

Hope it works for you - it%26#39;s a great small hotel.

Hi oldchazz,

Thanks very much for the tips! All in all it does sound like an enchanting evening.

I did a search for the hotel you recommended for our dates but I haven%26#39;t been able to find any room availability. So I have reserved another hotel via yeego.com and awaiting their reply.

Some people have been asking about hotels in Salzburg, I always stay at the NH Salzburg, I have been to Salzburg 5 times and I am going back again this Christmas. It is a truly magical place. The hotel is lovely, it is convenient, near a bus stop but also easy to walk to Mirabell Gardens and the old town, ( I go with my Mum so she is not able to get around easily.) I have never been to a Mozart Concert but believe the Stiftskeller is very magnificent. In fact all of Salzburg is beautiful, we went at Easter this year as well, so we also saw all the fountains and flowers. I have also stayed at The Marcus Sitticus and Trend Airport Hotel, but I am afraid they are no where near as good as the NH

Incidentally I had an incident at the Stiglbrau in the restaurant with a very rude waiter, so would NEVER recommend that hotel, but obviously each to their own.

The NH has a very good restaurant and is also near the Linzer Gasse. I really cannot praise Salzburg enough, Oberndorf is also a must at Christmas, and the markets. I agree every turn is a photo opportunity. So enjoy yourself.

Ahhh, those good ol%26#39; poor days as a student...here%26#39;s my 2-cents worth…

I know 33-euros sounds like a lot, especially if you%26#39;re under a student%26#39;s budget. And Salzburg is a beautiful city that can be covered without dipping much into your pockets (hmmm…that might be arguable). But, if you want to get the full exposure of Salzburg%26#39;s very rich culture, you should experience a Mozart concert in one of Salzburg’s classical settings. And in my opinion, I think the Mozart Dinner Concert in Skiftskeller St. Peter does a right blend of art, food, atmosphere, and tradition. From its baroquely-decorated acoustically-rich ballroom to the colorful Mozart-era costumes worn by the performers to the terrific performances from the quartet and the opera singers to the gourmet meal prepared from recipes during Mozart’s era to the romantic candle-lit ambiance…all provide you a real-like atmosphere of what it might have been like during Mozart’s heyday. Honestly, I’ve only been to two other operatic concerts in my life—one was in Vienna in the majestic Imperial Hofburg Palace (I think that’s what’s it’s called) and the other in the acoustically-amazing St. Chapelle in Paris—so, I can’t claim to be an expert at all. All three were exceptional, but if I had to choose one to recommend to friends, I would tell them to do the Mozart Dinner at St. Peter’s. (If you’re curious, St. Chapelle is a very close second.)

This may also help with your decision…we have a beautiful dimly-lit picture we took that showcases the musicians playing on a slightly-raised stage as the two people in front of us on the sides watching the show with candles illuminating from their table. We showed that picture to a friend and she instantly and excitedly knew where that was…her grandfather took her to the Mozart Dinner Concert in St. Peter’s when she was a child. Case in point, this is an experience you will never forget.

Best of luck and enjoy your stay in Salzburg.

Here%26#39;s the picture from the Mozart Dinner I referred to from above. It%26#39;s a bit blurry, but it%26#39;ll give you an idea of what you%26#39;ll see.
