I am thinking of booking a holiday in July and wonder which resort offers the most?

Maybe you could tell me more about what you expect? Which activities you plan or preferences you have?
I will give you some facts:
Both are beautifully located at lakes and surrounded by mountains.
St. Wolfgang:
- small village
- very pittoresque
- not easily reachable by public transport
- many other beautiful lakes nearby
Zell am See:
- small town (bigger than st. Wolfgang)
- easily reachable by bus or train
- not so remote or pittoresque, but still very nice
- more choice of restaurants and hotels

I did originally fancy Zell am see,but looking in the brochure I noticed St Wolfgang seems to be nearer to Salzberg. My husband is a dreadful passenger on mountain roads so I thought if we were nearer to Salzberg at least I could get him to visit there!
We have just been to Germany and absolutely loved it so as Austria is available from my local airport with Thomson I have persuaded him to visit.
I am looking at the Gruner Baum hotel as its very central and it has 100%scores from last years guests. We like walking as long as its on the flat,so anywhere with walking trails would be fine.
The only thing that bothers me is I read that Austria havent yet banned smoking indoors and I would hate it if there was smoking in the dinning rooms of the hotels.

I stayed in Zell am See last year and its a lovely place. There is a flat walking promenade alongside the lake, boat trips on the lake. Most hotels can arrange excursions to nearby places of interest, such as the Eagles nest, an historical and stunning setting just over the border with germany. If you are thinking of hiring a car, then you wouldn%26#39;t need to in Zell am See. The train station has regular trains to Salzburg and is much more pleasant than mountain roads for bad travellers. The local buses will bring you to the base of several cable car stations, with lovely flat walks at the top. Check in the tourist office for details. A lot of people speak some English so getting tickets isn%26#39;t a problem.
On the subject of smoking, there was certainly never anyone smoking in our hotel dining room and didn%26#39;t notice anywhere else, unlike Germany where even after the ban it can be a problem! Hope this helps and enjoy your holiday!

Viv,Which hotel did you stay in?
How far is Salzberg on the train?
|||
Although I have not stayed there, the Gruner Baum is located on the main road through Zell and I think would be quite noisy. This is borne out one of the the TA reviews. It takes nearly two hours from Zell to Salzburg by train, but it is quicker by car. The road route is not particularly mountaineous if you go via Saalfelden and Bad Reichenhall. The train does however take quite a scenic route along the Salzach in the opposite direction. I agree there is more to do in Zell and surrounding area than St Wolfgang which is a small but very pretty village on the Wolfgangsee.

Apologies - I have confused this hotel with another - the Zum Hirschen - the Gruner Baum is further down towards the lake in the pedestrianised zone - still think it would be quite noisy with the windows open at night.

The Gruner Baum is not now available for the date I want to go,July 2nd.
I have also looked at St Johann and Kitzbuhel, although I prefer a lakeside resort.
I will see what the travel agent comes up with tomorrow.
Thanks for advice.

After going round in circles I have now booked to go to Kitzbuhel!
As I want to go next week there wasnt much availability and was offered St Gilgen,St Wolfgang and Zell am see but chose Kitzbuhel mainly because the hotel,Edelweiss, had excellent reviews.
As long as we can get out and about and the train to Salzburg it will be fine.
Thanks to everyone who has answered my queries.
Anyone been to Kitbuhel?
